From the recipe by Peter Josef Früh of the family brewery, this top-fermented specialty beer features the best ingredients and is brewed according to the German Purity Law. A favorite beer of Cologne, which became one of the city’s original.

Bottle: Small, quick disappearing airy white head on top of a clear golden yellow colored beer. Smell malts and some hops and herbs. Taste is a decent hoppy malty mix, with some subtle bitterness coming through. Not much else to be tasted. Nice bitter aftertaste. Medium carbo and body, light sharp tingly mouthfeel and a light watery body.

Min första Kölsch. Förstår inte riktigt det speciella med sorten. Hade tagit den för en helt ok lager om jag inte vetat bättre. Ljus med flyktigt vitt skumm.

Tap@ fruh. Clear golden. Fine white head. Wheat-like milde aromas. Dry with a little sweetness some hops in the cellar. Boring uniform like all other kølsch I tasted in Cologne. I could not tell the difference between them and they should remove the appeleration rules they have made as fast as possible. 0,2 cl per glas of a drinkable brew that makes you order and drink more.

Pours a crystal clear straw yellow with a big frothy white head. Aroma is grain and a little bread. Taste is crisp, refreshing with a slight grainy aftertaste. Solid Kolsch

UPDATED: DEC 27, 2011 Draft from Fruh brauhaus, Cologne. Clear and crisp, yet a little more complex flavour than your typical helles or pilsener.

Bottle. Straw-golden, almost no head to speak of. Soft and gentle malty, only marginally hoppy aroma. Taste is malty, citrusy, with a very light breadiness and fruitiness, followed by a light bitterness. Very light, smooth and relaxed beer that still is not watery. Very well balanced, has substance and chill-out vibe at the same time.

My Bottom Line :
Herbal, spicy hops poke through this frail Kölsch’s malt crackers, ending up in dryness and whispering hop bitterness.

Further Personal Perceptions :
-A tuft of foam sits atop the cledar pale gold.
-Its hoppy presence is delicate yet still more apparent than the average Kölsch.
-Subtle citrusy notes accentuate drinkability.
-Malts are endowed with honeyed edges, but those are even tamer than most examples of the style.
-This remains a great little quencher, even if it cannot be as memorable as Malzmühle, for example.

From the wooden cask at the brewery restaurant.
