From the recipe by Peter Josef Früh of the family brewery, this top-fermented specialty beer features the best ingredients and is brewed according to the German Purity Law. A favorite beer of Cologne, which became one of the city’s original.

UPDATED: APR 4, 2007 During my first visit to Dusseldorf, I was looking forward to try a local alt. I got to try Fruh Kolsch at Schalander instead. I thought it looked more like a lager, I was fooled by its flavor. It had a taste more like a top fermenting ale. It has a delicate, slightly fruit aroma, with a light fruit flavor. Dry hops finish and refreshing.

Bottle of this bought in Köln. Loved it lemony and dry hopped to the nuts. Page 173 of Michael Jackson’s Great Beer Guide only 405 out of 500 Classic Brews to go.

On tap at the Delirium Café in Göteborg: Yellow clear colour, with a nice white head. Aroma of lots of malt and a nice hopy nose(Saaz). Flavor is almost the same, nice dry hopy mouth feeling, medium body, light to medium finish. This is a werry nice complete beer.

Bottled(500ml). -Pale golden coloured, huge white head, slight cardboard nose. Low carbonation. The aroma is malty, hoppy and slight grainy with strong herbal notes. Dry bitter finish. My second Kölsch, and Küppers is much better.

Appearance: Pale straw/light gold with fluffy white head Aroma: Light complex pilsner malt character little to no hop aroma Flavour: Very light but complex with pilsner malt and noble hop flavours. Nothing too distinct but clean and light. Very clean. Mouthfeel: light body which disappears quickly in the mouth (and glass) Overall : Very light crisp and clean with pilsner malt being the star of the show and the main flavour profile. Very clean and easy drinking.

Vom fass @ Früh am Dom, Köln, Germany.
The Kobe’s were on fire upon our visit to this Brauhaus. Smiling endlessly, pulling the piss out of anyone and everyone, and generally eyeing off the tables outside with full Kranze in hand ensuring all the patrons had fresh bier to imbibe. It was barely 10 in the morning, the Kölsch in Stange being the breakfast of most Kölnites, I had to oblige.
Served up a pale, sunshine tinged, straw-yellow. Carbonation, very intermittent if at all, seemed sluggish to rise. Head retained well, a big messy dollop of cream that webbed down the glass. Pear drops, bitter fruit and feint honey on the nose, very subtle to suit the carbonation. Creamy light palate, almost still with only a slight tickle on the tip of the tongue. Clean, palest malts, definite pear flavour on the tongue, light vine-clipping tang in back before a malty, clean, smooth swallow. Very little bitterness, quite subtle in all aspects but very refreshing given the time of morning I tried it. Body is delicate making it dangerous if it weren’t for the size of the Stange glasses. Put an empty glass down, another full one replaces it before you can finish a short sentence. Good stuff!!!

[Tasted locally im Kneipe Früh in Køln with Alexander.] Drank a lot of this famous beer in the famous Früh a côte der Dom. Multiserved in the dedicated 20 cl glass, which means that the beer always is fresh, we got the possibility to investigate this aleyeasted german. Looks like a pilsner with its golden look, but the aroma is hoppy with sweet notes. Flavor is some malty and hoppysour leading to a dry bitter finish. Not what I had expected. The Reissdorf is better...what the locals also mention.

Bottled. Golden colour, big white bubbly head. Aroma is salty hops with some grassy and maizeish notes. Flavour is salty hops with malts also balancing it up. Quite dry bitter finish. A nice thing.

Very very easy drinking beer. Refreshing and propably a good "session beer". Doesn’t work very well with greasy fried german food, which demands a stronger, more bitter and hoppy beer. Despite all the rant, it’s very good.
