3.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 buzzoven (376) - - MAR 30, 2009
Poured a deep opaque black. Smelled strongly of clove and banana. Palate was perfect...very smooth and slightly creamy. Some chocolate in the finish. Had some kind of Weizen/Bock hybrid action going on. Interesting beer (also known as Black Wheat?)
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 jonno (1457) - JAPAN - FEB 12, 2012
Soft weizen bock nose. Very soft body. A smidge of chocolate malt with an array of bananas in various slates of ripeness. Reasonably balanced and none too rich. Very easy drinking.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 rederic (2326) - montréal, Quebec, CANADA - OCT 14, 2009
Sampled at the last Mondial, dark brown color, with a creamy beige head, chocolatey, fruity nose of dates, sultana raisins, with some roasted, toasted, faint whaety malty accents, with some hints of coffee in the aoma follws through on a medium-bodied palate with a toasted, chocolate, roasty, wheat malt nutty, yeasty fruity, spicy character of ripe apples and cinnamon with a light nutella, cookie dough, faint brownie flavour, leading towards a chocolatey, lingering roasty bitterness finish.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 DougShoemaker (3149) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - JUN 7, 2009
Bottle @ Mondial 2009.
Aroma of roast coffee, chocolate, but where’s the wheat? deep burgundy, small toffee head. Flavour is a milder chocolate and coffee than the nose, wheat is now present. Medium bodied, very well balanced, bitter and bold. Great stuff!
2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 MartinT (6350) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - JUN 6, 2009
My Bottom Line:
Vegetal notes mar bother the cocoa earthiness, making this already eclectic offering quite the strange one.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam covers the dark brown.
-The body is well rounded and softly carbonated with big bubbles.
-Some roasted malts attempt to add complexity.
-This is my first Fukizakura deception. After reading other ratings, I suppose this bottle was not in the beer’s finest representation.
From the bottle at the Mondial de la Bière.
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 KyotoLefty (3760) - Kyoto, JAPAN - SEP 10, 2008
Draught at Best Beer Selection ’08, Osaka.
Opaque near-black with a tall off-white to tan head. Wheat malt aroma, with cocoa, some cloves, bananas. Rather strong sour note as well. Not overly sweet, strong flavors of wheat malt and chocolate, rather lightly spiced with lots of bananas. Bottle was a bit disappointing, but it was much better on tap, where the chocolate flavors really came through.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Capa (1634) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - FEB 6, 2008
Another Japanese brew for Valentine’s Day. Deep hazy brown with a large, rocky, tan head. Intersting mix of wheat, yeast, and powdered chocolate; though both play second fiddle to the intensely sweet malts. A fair amount of wheat in the flavor, with sweet malts, chocolate, and yeast completing the package. Smooth, full body. I actually really enjoyed the chocolate - wheat back and forth in this brew. I’ll look for it again next year.
