TheJollyOne (46), Kofu, Japan Oct 16, 2008 Poured a huge frothy head that lasted towards the end. Body was a smoky brown colour. The smell was roasted malts, smoke, sausage, hickory, and a strong molasses. Beautiful nose! Taste was sweet moving to bitter; honey, wood, clove, roasted malts, touch of spiced sausage. Palate was dry and lively, a touch watery. Loved the weizen, but this one took the cake. Nice to live 30 min from such a brewer when Japans options get you down. KyotoLefty (306), Kyoto, Japan Jul 24, 2008 Smoked so the Japanese palate can handle it, which means less than in Bamberg, but without any flaws. Great balance of smoke, wood, and caramel with just enough hops to bring it through cleanly. Good malt character. I like ’em just a bit more smoky, but this one is really well done. BückDich (4605), Boise, Idaho, USA Oct 6, 2007 Sampled @ GJBF Yokohama: Caramel, nice off-white head and light lacing. Nose of bright wood and light smoke. Clean caramel and a tight snappy rauch character. The flavor is nice. Chewy finish. MartinT (4458), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Aug 1, 2007 My Bottom Line:
Earthy toasted maltiness masterfully mixes into the levelled beechwood smokiness, smoothly developing into a splendidly complex and seamless finish. This crafty Rauchbier is yet another testament to this brewer’s prowess.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam covers the deep orangey-copper.
-A straightforward example, it is right on style, highly drinkable and flavorful.
-A side-by-side comparison between this one and Otaru’s own Rauchbier would make a superb battle of the Japanese smoked beers.
On tap at the brewery restaurant. jonno (217), Japan Feb 1, 2007 Solid if if not totally spectacular dark beer. The smoked taste and flavor is highly apparent at first, but dies down after a while. May need to try this again for a better rating some time in the future
