Bottle at home though I also had it on tap at Bungalow. The first Japanese beer that really blew my mind as well as one of the first smoked beers I’ve ever had. This is one of the best beers made in Japan and has never disappointed me. It pours a purple amber brown with a light beige foamy head. As soon as you have a glass nearby you can get the wonderful smoked aroma wafting towards you. The flavor starts of smokey, then brings up a spicy malt base and ends on a smokey note with subtle hints of bacon. One of my favorite Japanese beers.

shoulderbroken (1144) - Tokyo, JAPAN - AUG 5, 2012
Bottle from a local supermarket. Dark amber brown colour. Aroma meaty, smoke, bit beefy like a belgian dubbel might be, slight chemical smell, soy sauce. Taste is similar, soy sauce, smoke, touch of sweetness lingering in background. Bit thin and fizzy palate wise. Not bad but not great.

Dark brown in color with a khaki head. Aroma of smoked fish, soy sauce, and salt. A light almond aroma, some bacon, and toasted bread. Flavor is a little less "fishy". Good smoke character, a hint of bacon, salt, meat, and wood. Toasted bread, light chocolate, and a subtle sweetness to it.

maekchu (1090) - Hirakata, JAPAN - MAY 15, 2012
On tap at Kyoto Craft Beer Festa 2012. Aroma is purely smoke, with a touch of sweet malt. Orange-brown (or, as a friend put it, dark "roan" when held up to the light), with good lacing. Flavors are smoke and more smoke with some solid malt underneath. Great metamorphosis from pure smoke to bitter smoke to sweet smoke. Palate is watery. Overall, though, this is a real treat. It just won a gold medal at the WBC 2012.
