Decent beer. Aroma was burnt malt, dark chocolate and coffee. Not very strong but pleasant. Pour was a beautiful deep dark black with a nice 2 finger dark brown head. Looked like a milk shake. Taste was very brash. Strong dark chocolate and bitter coffee grip the top of the mouth and never let go. Extremely bitter finish that is way too harsh and is borderline astringent. Light carbonation. As it warmed the astringent flavor comes out more and makes the mouth almost feel numb after the swallow.

355 mL bottle. Listed as a stout here, and as a "west coast stout" on the label. Pretty much a roasty black IPA. Well hopped, decent body, nice beer.

Bottle 12 fl oz - 355 ml from Argonaut Liquors in Denver, on April 5, 2014.
Black color, big fluffy light brown head, plenty of lacing. Roasted, sweet, chalky, hoppy aftertaste. Roasted, grainy, hoppy, bitter taste. Medium mouthfeel, high bitterness.

12 ounce bottle <br/ > This sat around for a while before I finally got around to cracking it open. Even so the result was probably underwhelming to begin with. While it does show some signs of promise this beer is best stored with zombies while you find more robust stouts to drink.

Aroma / Appearance - A creamy black base over dense mocha head looks like earth turned over by a fresh zombie after a heavy rain. Raspberry, dark chocolate, malt, and leaking oil stick in the air. Over time it slowly lightens like a morning fog.

Flavor / Palate - A harsh texture of overdone coffee ruins an otherwise pleasant experience. The fluid mouthfeel and long finish let this stick around well beyond its initial welcome. Milk chocolate, cigarette ash, and malt almost salvage the experience. Unfortunately in the end this is just another run of the mill stout that is best scrolled past.

Pailhead (4806) - Brownstown, Michigan, USA - MAR 14, 2014
Bottle: The aroma consists of moderate-heavy espresso, dark chocolate, light black licorice, roasted malt, light grapefruit, and pine. It pours a dark brown with no transparency and a one finger tan head that eventually fades to a thin film outlined by a soapy ring. There is some thin webbing left on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with moderate dark chocolate, roasted malt, faint hints of black licorice, and espresso. The finish has moderate burnt notes, light-moderate pine, and grapefruit. It’s medium bodied with mild carbonation and a somewhat soft mouthfeel. Overall, it’s a pretty tasty Stout, but it’s a tad too heavy on the burnt notes.

Bottle:   Dark, rich hops up front, malty, a touch ashy witih a bit of astringency.   Yeah, quite ashy.   Big roasted malt character, but seemingly a bit thin or weak in body.   Could stand to be smoother, perhaps a touch sweeter.

12 oz bottle poured at home. Smell is nice with chocolate scent. Taste of citrus and hops. Bitter finish. Huge coffee notes. Good beer with a dark pour and tan head. One of my favorites.

Bottle from jbwimer. Thanks! Pours pitch black and thick looking with a one finger mocha colored head. Big roasty aroma with a bit of bittersweet chocolate and dark fruits. Flavor is strong roastiness, light bittersweet chocolate, more roast, and some nice lingering earthy coffee tones left on the palate. Big bold mouthfeel to match the flavors with medium carbonation. This is a really excellent big roasty stout. Serious body and flavor for the ABV.

For a stout, it has epic proportion citrus hop character. Finishes dry. Huge coffee notes. Fun, damn good beer.

Pours a nice, thick black with a creamy tan head. Aroma consists fairly of fairly strong dark malts including hints of coffee and chocolate. Taste is lightly bitter at first and finishes somewhat stronger. Almost creamy to the feel. Excellent lacing down the glass. Would buy again next year.

UPDATED: JAN 9, 2014 Bottle from Save On. Black with lasting brown head and lotsa lace. Roasted chocolate and coffee with some fruity grassy hops aroma. Very roasted dark chocolate espresso with minimal dark fruit and very dry woody grassy hoppy finish with a finishing touch of citrus. Full body, pleasant creamy texture. Excellent. The hop/dark malt character reminds me a little of the amazing Alpha Klaus. Pciks up some ashy smokiness as it warms.
