Surprisingly good bourbon barrel aged beer. Great balance for the style. Not sure how available this beer is, or the cost, but I’d search out some more.

Pours an opaque black into the glass, with a fully diminished head that leaves a trace ring of suds. The nose is of heavy rye with chocolate-covered cherries and light alcohol notes underneath. Flavors are indeed rye malt, bittersweet dark chocolates and a bittering hop to finish. Thick and full-bodied, the carbonation is semi-active on the palate and velvety on the palate. A decent take on the impy stout, especially with the infusion of the rye.

Tap. Pours deep mahogany, small creamy tan head, nice lacing. Aroma is whiskey, cocoa, rye spices. Flavor is very rye whiskey forward, which is no skin off my nose. Light body for style.

On tap at DLD 2014. Pour is black with no head. Aroma and flavor of chocolate, bourbon, vanilla, roasted malt, and rye. Well balanced, alcohol is hidden, just a bit boring.

Transfer from BA review on 5-27-12- Poured from bottle into a snifter Appearance – The beer pours a thick deep brown almost black color with a one finger tan head. The head is small but has fantastic retention with it fading very slowly over time to give a very nice amount of lacing. Smell – The aroma is heavy of roasted dark bread and very light amount of dark fruit. These aromas are mixed with a light chocolate a good dose of a boozy aroma. Taste – The taste starts out of roasted malt and some sweet dark fruit and caramel taste. These tastes slowly transition in the middle losing some of the dark fruit flavors with the bready flavors getting more intense toward the middle. The breadiness is mixed with some chocolate and a bourbon flavor that intensifies to the end of the taste. In the end the taste is nice of chocolate-rye whisky with notes of booziness, cocoa and rye bread. Mouthfeel – The body is very thick and smooth and coats the tongue with all the flavors of the brew. The initial sweeter tastes and the later more bitter/boozy tastes really get to sink into the tongue. The carbonation level in some ways takes away from the creamy body however as it is slightly higher than normal for a beer of this beers strength. While slightly over-carbonated, the mouthfeel is still overall quite good giving a nice warming feel. Overall – This beer has some very nice characteristics. It has a nice look good roasty and bourbon flavors that transition well throughout the taste as well as a very nice creamy body.

Bottle: The aroma consists of moderate-heavy chocolate, molasses, caramel, vanilla, faint smoke, and dark fruits. It pours a dark brown with no transparency and a minimal beige head that mostly consists of some steak bubbles. The flavor starts with moderate chocolate and molasses. There is a touch of grain in the middle. The finish has roasted coffee, caramel, faint burnt notes, vanilla, coconut, and a touch of oak. It’s medium bodied with mild carbonation.

Full rich dark color, pouring a deep brown/black. Head was thick and medium brown. Great initial flavor with a smooth taste left in the mouth.

Draft at Dutch’s. Pours dark brown to black with a thin beige film. The aroma and flavor have a nice chocolate character, mild roast, dark fruits, bourbon, vanilla, and a touch of spicy rye. Enough flavor to help balance the barrel. The real knock on this is the thin mouthfeel and lighter body. I would like to see this be a bit bigger.

3/30/14. Draft at the Beer Market. Poirs dark red brown with a one finger head in a 10 oz tulip glass. Light roasty nose. Dark flavor notes without much sweetness or bourbon notes. Nicely balanced with rye giving it a nice mouthfeel. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
