beerinmarch (2781), Alabama, USA Oct 20, 2006 This beer is incredible, I had a few bottles of this in my "cellar", but I just couldn’t stop bringing these out when beer-loving guests came over, just to impressive. Pours thick black with a brown head. Very rich throughout with a great depth of flavors. Chocolate, coffee, caramel, vanilla, oakiness, and that kick of bourbon. As you pour a glass of this and sip it as it warms you get to see the many faces of flavor in this one. I would love to get a shot at this brew on tap, but these bottles will probably age really well, if you can keep them around since I can’t seem to. kenb (1100), Oregon, USA Oct 18, 2006 22 oz bottle from indianaRed(thanks!). Pours a near midnight black with no head. Nose is of bourbon, raisons, alcohol, wood. Taste is the same. I’m sorry, but i do not seem to like these woody, oaky, abv!, barrel taste beers... feedmec00kies (49), New York, New York, USA Oct 16, 2006 again, as with the heavyweight wee whale, a little later than puzzl and lukin’s but i’m procrastinating schoolwork instead of procrastinating entering ratings. anyway, woody, vanilla, bourbon, some roasty malt notes both in the nose and flavor, but i do agree that the bourbon flavor was overwhelming. would prefer the alcohol to be a little better hidden. jetzler (622), oklahoma city, Oklahoma, USA Oct 16, 2006 Updated: Oct 17, 2006Bottle Thanks to Acertain. 53F. Snifter. Aroma is dominated by malts, and oak, hops were very hidden, but the sweet smell of molasses and vanilla were very nice. Pours very dark black, with a very small brown head. Great warming flavor, drank outside on the deck watching the rain fall. The flavor was of strong molasses and pure vanilla bean, rich oak, the hops were slightly present in the background, The mouthfeel was not cloying but big enough to stand up for the grain bill. Very nice, went perfectly with the cool wet weather, and then I light a cigar and it definately held its ground. bager (2121), Copenhagen N, Denmark Oct 15, 2006 Bottled. Black coloured with a medium sized head. Roasted malt with notes of coffee and dark fruits. Really nice. Great mouthfeel. lukin013 (211), Columbia, Maryland, USA Oct 12, 2006 Bottle shared with puzzl and feedmecookies. Aroma is exceptionally woody, with some vanilla, roast, and bourbon. Flavor is pretty much the same, but the bourbon sticks out more in the strong alcohol burn. Good, but I wish the alcohol was slightly better hidden. tupalev (2605), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Oct 12, 2006 Bottle shared with Hogtown Harry, Blankboy, and MDS, Blankboy’s bottle. I agree with Blankboy, enough with the bourbon barrel stuff. I aslo agree in that I was shitfaced at this point in the night. Bourbon aroma - some roast too. Decent taste - rich malt, bourbon, malt and hop finish. Solid impy stout completely dominated by bourbon - not over the top like some, but enough to make me want to try it sans barrel. Thanks for a great silly tasting guys! blankboy (3157), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Oct 11, 2006 Bottle shared with HogTownHarry, mds & tupalev -- my bottle courtesy of acertain. Full disclosure: I was fucking shit-faced by the time I got to this beer at our last tasting and my notes are pretty scratchy and sparse. I have another bottle and I fully intend to rerate this puppy. For now, let’s see if I can read my writing: Pours a very dark brown, almost black, with a small diminishing tan head. Aroma of bourbon up front along with vanilla, roasted malt and some chocolate. Flavour, well, I must admit all I wrote is "absolutely delicous" so I hope to be more specific next time. Medium to full bodied. I must agree with HogTownHarry, enough is enough with all the ’bourbon barrel-aged’ beers but as it stands on it’s own, this is a great beer. A definite rerate to come.
