Malt beverage aged in oak bourbon barrels.
A hearty brew that is black as night with a strong roasted malt character and a full body. After its initial release in January 2010, our Imperial Stout was aged for a full year in Bourbon casks from Kentucky. This extended aging presents hints vanilla and oak. This, combined with the robust character of the Imperial Stout make for a smooth, wonderful taste experience. A hearty cellar beer. Very Limited Availability - 22oz Bottles and Draught. Black Gold was named one of "the best" barrel aged beers in the US by Menís Journal and took home a silver medal at the 2006 Great American Beer Festivalģ in the Wood and Barrel Aged Strong beer category).

Note: In 2011 went from 10.5% to 11.4%.
2013 - 9.6% ABV.

UPDATED: JAN 9, 2014 Draft at Bigwood, 12/6/2012. [10 of 11]. From notes. Pours jet black, thin tan ring of head, leaves irregular lacing. Aroma/taste/overall impression is dominated by bourbon. Thereís a lot of barrel here. Sweet, roasty, smooth, full-bodied. When compared side-by-side in a line-up with other great barrel-aged beers, it doesnít leave a big impression (which is probably unfair -- I expect Iíll rate this again some time on its own terms).

2006 bottle. Big thanks to OldMrCrow for digging this one out of his cellar. Itís fitting that Iíd forgotten Iíd rated this one before based on my previous description. Anyway, pours near black with a small ring of bubbles. Aroma of dark fruit, oxidation / old beer. Held up surprisingly well, in that it still feels like it has some soul, even if accompanied by a bit of cardboard. Reasonably dry, still has some bourbon to it, chocolate, slick texture with a nice alcohol burn. Interestingly, my notes indicate I rated this 7.5/4/8/4/14, so basically the same as the original rating (which Iím going to let stand). Perhaps Iím fair and consistent, or I havenít grown at all in the last year, or perhaps itís just a coincidence.

Bottle shared at the Foothills bottle share... thanks for setting it up, Mike! Dark chocolate pour. Healthy chocolate-bourbon blend in the flavor. Thin and crisp body. Solid but a bit simplistic.

Very reminiscent of black note. Some date or raisin hints that pervade Aroma and even the taste. Bourbon is under appreciated here.

Location: 22 oz bottle from Buy Rite, 4/13/14, 2013 Release

Aroma: Aroma of burnt malts, bourbon, molasses, vanilla, oak, and brown sugar
Appearance: It pours a dark brown color with a thin head and light, spotty lace
Flavor: The flavor is sweet for the style, with a dry, burnt malt flavor, and a sweet bourbony finish
Palate: It has a medium-full body, a thick, sticky mouthfeel, and a soft mouthfeel
Overall Impression: Overly sweet for my taste. The bourbon plays nicely enough with the burnt and sweet malt flavors, but it could have used a little balance. It hides the 9.6% nicely.

Lots of flavor with a strong bourbon sent and a slight taste. Hints of cocoa. The bourbon does seem to linger a little to long on the palit.

I donít think this beer is really "Black Gold", but ratebeer assures me this is the same thing even though it has a different label. 2014 bottle. Pours jet black with a small tan head. Milky chocolate on the nose, a nice nutty note there, light coffee, caramel and a hint of bourbon.Taste is kind of light and watery unfortunately, milky chocolate, caramel, vanilla, roasty coffee, some light oak and bourbon, and a wierd nutty taste. A little disappointed here, this is like barrel aged stout lite.

Side by side with the Top Sail Imperial Porter (Bourbon). This is the better of the two--the bourbon is softer and the alcohol finishes it nicely. It is hotter than maybe it should be, but it propels this beer in a good way, too. Bottle.

Draught at wob. Initial sip is smooth, milk chocolate, and heavy roasted malt. Vanilla is big in middle and it blends into caramel in the finish. Very well masked abv, but def has a warming effect. Not overpowering with bourbon barrel.

Pitch black with minimal head. Big bourbon and chocolate scent on the nose, pretty great. Taste is bourbon, dark malt, on the thin side and the bourbon dominates. Taste doesnít stack up to the aroma but pretty decent nonetheless.

Midnight black pour with thin brown head. Strong corn-y bourbon scent, tootsie roll chocolate and carmel too. Low carbonation, watery mouthfeel and clean finish. Sweet chocolate and more bourbon in the flavor, smokey bitter taste on finish. Flavors are good but disconnected and the bourbon-ness is on the harsh side.

Draught at The Bier Stein. Boozy chocolate, fumes, thick dark fruit. Pitch black, good lace. Bourbon notes right away / light prunes and smooth cocoa. Medium-heavy body. Very tasty, but too young. Body is a bit thin for the style.
