COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Malt beverage aged in oak bourbon barrels.
A hearty brew that is black as night with a strong roasted malt character and a full body. After its initial release in January 2010, our Imperial Stout was aged for a full year in Bourbon casks from Kentucky. This extended aging presents hints vanilla and oak. This, combined with the robust character of the Imperial Stout make for a smooth, wonderful taste experience. A hearty cellar beer. Very Limited Availability - 22oz Bottles and Draught. Black Gold was named one of "the best" barrel aged beers in the US by Men’s Journal and took home a silver medal at the 2006 Great American Beer Festival® in the Wood and Barrel Aged Strong beer category).

Note: In 2011 went from 10.5% to 11.4%.
2013 - 9.6% ABV.

Tasted at tasting room. Pours thick, tan head on top of dark, black beer. Held up to light and could see slight shades of ruby gleaming through. Personally, I like to not see through my stouts. Aroma is unmistakably bourbon. I love it! Wow! Flavor is full bourbon also. Quickly shifts to wood, then chocolate, then quickly back to bourbon. Looking deeply into the glass, I was able to find almond/amaretto flavors, as well as what I could only identify as toasted coconut. Slight alcoholic burn at the end, that’s o.k. This is a nice beer. Taste’s a little young, could benifit from aging for a short while (three months or so). Well done!

Pours almost black with a very dark tan frothy head. The aroma is cocoa, alcohol, and whiskey oakiness. Its a little creamy and way too smooth. Flavors are mellow cocoa, vanilla, and oaky whiskey. Again, the body is just too smooth. Wow! Some incredible talent went into this one. Most impressive. On the finish, some of the bitterness develops to round things ouy and draw out all the previous flavors.

Appearance: Black with thin layer of creamy beige head Aroma: Vanilla, butterscotch, burnt caramel Flavor: Very pronounced but not overwhelming bourbon barrel flavor with a great vanilla finish. Creamy, full bodies yet surprisingly drinkable with a wonderful cognac finish. Overall: If you’re a looking for a textbook bourbon barrel aged imperial stout, this is a shining example.

Bomber poured into snifter. Color is pitch black with a pencil thin, dark tan head that dissipates. Smells of malt, vanilla, a faint fruity sweetness and a heavy dose of bourbon. Taste up front is roasted malt with some vanilla, and the finish is long and boozy with a brown sugary sweetness from the bourbon. It’s odd and definitely unique. Solid.

Bottle. Pours a near-black color with a moderate tan head on them. Nose is roasty and very slightly sour with some dark fruit elements to it. Taste is definitely roasty with just a hint of sourness from the dark fruits. Odd, but interesting.

Pours as dark as the night with a quick dissipating head and a thin lacing lacing left behind, this impeeial stout has a huge taste of bourbon and vanilla with a roastiness that balances well it's bitterness. Medium to full bodies with a warm aftertaste of alcohol this beer is not too demanding or overpowering, but instead it balances itself to a very welcoming warmness. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bourbon and oak nose, strong and hot. Dates and chocolate also perceptible. Mahogany, practically black, medium tan head. Flavor is all bourbon, with maybe a subtle layer of charred oak. Full body, but not super viscous. Smooth, and actually not as hot as I feared. Obviously too much bourbon, but still drinkable.
