COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The first beer in the Brewer’s Share Series is "Extra Special Barney" (ESB) and was developed by our lead brewer, Barney Brennan. According to Barney, his ESB was inspired by two things; a perfect beer moment and the aromatic highlight of the 2007 hop selection in Yakima, a US Challenger hop. As Barney puts it, "I was sitting on the deck at the brewery overlooking the river in the sunshine - drinking a perfectly balanced bitter - already looking forward to the second pint. It was one of those great beer moments. Hopefully, my ESB will make one of those moments for someone else with its five different specialty malts and this one very special hop. We made it entirely with US Challenger hops including a pound per barrel dry hop because we wanted to share the aromatic experience we had at the Hop Rub in Yakima with our customers."

The aroma is malty and a touch nutty with herbal hops and a tiny bit of fruit. The appearance is amber with a medium head. The taste is like the aroma with a bit of butterscotch. The palate is smooth. Overall a very good beer.

Bottle @ home. Clear, burnt orange appearance with a cream colored head. Toasty toffee, grassy, straw, a touch citrusy aroma. Rich toffee malty, orange/lemon citrusy, toasty, bitter, lightly woody, hay flavor. Alright but I prefer Bridgeport ESB.

Bomber, thanks brenn79. Pours hazy orange with a medium dissipating beige head. Aroma is fruity--apples definitely--cinnamon, wet river rock, caramel. Taste starts out sweet and finishes dry and bitter. Carbonation is average, body medium, carbonation a little creamy. Seems a little boring.

From a bottle poured an amber color with a fair amount of head. Light hoppy flavor with a quick finish.

Interesting light reddish-brown color. Interesting smell and a slight bitter taste. Fairly delicate

poured from 22oz bomber - hmm...look, I like the iridescent orange appearance and the perfect viscosity, but this is an odd beer! Something intangible I don’t like about the overall experience with this thing; the flavor profile is hard to pinpoint and not altogether enjoyable. I think the main ingredients are orange peel and distilled vinegar. Go on, piss off now.

Bottle. Pours with a hazed, burnt orange to copper hued body with a lasting, small, near white head that fades. Some lace. Aromas are sweet, bready, nutty, malty, caramel, toffee, marmalade, light british yeast esters, pear, crackery, light earthy notes. Flavors are of caramel, medium esters, quite a bit of tea character, toffee, marmalade, light herbal and floral hop notes. Medium to slightly lower carbonation with a fuller body.

Not a bad brew, but not my favorite. Pours a slightly hazy amber color with a small head. Good malts to the nose that almost hint at a bread, but not a lot of bitterness.

THOUGHTS: Very malty with just enough hops to keep it from becoming cloying. Something was slightly off in the aroma, but was not too unpleasant. The malt flavors were the real stars. Sort of British. More hops came out as it warmed, but they were still only supporting players to the malt. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a hazy to murky, medium to dark, brownish orange with a small, cream-colored, head that kept a thin sheet and left good lacing. The aroma had moderate to heavy caramel and grain (later); light to moderate floral, herbal and earthy hops; less citrusy lemon hops; toffee; tea; and slight butterscotch. The initial flavor was moderately sweet and slightly bitter; while the finish was moderate to heavily sweet, lightly bitter and slightly acidic with an average duration. There was caramel, tea, toffee, sweet malts, maybe a little honey, lemon citrus hops, earthy and somewhat herbal hops. The medium body was oily and slightly syrupy, but mostly slick with fizzy carbonation and lightly metallic and dry finish.
