The first beer in the Brewer’s Share Series is "Extra Special Barney" (ESB) and was developed by our lead brewer, Barney Brennan. According to Barney, his ESB was inspired by two things; a perfect beer moment and the aromatic highlight of the 2007 hop selection in Yakima, a US Challenger hop. As Barney puts it, "I was sitting on the deck at the brewery overlooking the river in the sunshine - drinking a perfectly balanced bitter - already looking forward to the second pint. It was one of those great beer moments. Hopefully, my ESB will make one of those moments for someone else with its five different specialty malts and this one very special hop. We made it entirely with US Challenger hops including a pound per barrel dry hop because we wanted to share the aromatic experience we had at the Hop Rub in Yakima with our customers."

Bomber from Safeway. Clear, light amber pour with a short, off-white head leaving minimal lace. Malty, ripe fruit nose. Medium-light body with light carbonation. Ripe fruit, citrus, grain, tea and sugar. Finish is astringent and bitter. Good, but not entirely sessionable and not really one of the best ESBs I’ve had.

bottle. nutty, toasty, crunchy nose with sharp apple / pear esters, light corn whiskey / grain touches, toffee / caramel is pleasantly snappy; hops are quiet but earthy / gritty / rough. toasty and crunchy malt, but somewhat doughy altogether with the heavy-feeling body, bready malts and "baker’s yeast" character..

Being one of my favourite styles, I had big hopes for this one, but alas, it was not to be- very, very pedestrian.

Bottle from Sam’s. Hazy orange with a small white head. Nose is heavily malted, bread, grain, caramel. Flavor is pretty similar, very sweet for a beer with bitter in the name. This beer sucks. But ill probably finish it because i am poor.

22oz bottle courtesy of argo0: Pours a clear deep bronze amber with a stringy-lacing white head. Has a lightly sweet pale malty nose with a touch of floral and grassy hops. Starts with a biting carbonation and light sweetness with a hint of butterscotch and peppery hop bitterness before a drier, herbal finish. Could be a little smoother and more drinkable.

651mL thanks to argo0. Pours a clear lighter orange with a medium off white head. Suddy lace. Nose is fruit juicy and sugary with margarine and old sugar. Taste is sweet, buttered sweet rolls, mild butter, slick. Mildly astringent palate with thicker buttered rolls. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
