The first beer in the Brewer’s Share Series is "Extra Special Barney" (ESB) and was developed by our lead brewer, Barney Brennan. According to Barney, his ESB was inspired by two things; a perfect beer moment and the aromatic highlight of the 2007 hop selection in Yakima, a US Challenger hop. As Barney puts it, "I was sitting on the deck at the brewery overlooking the river in the sunshine - drinking a perfectly balanced bitter - already looking forward to the second pint. It was one of those great beer moments. Hopefully, my ESB will make one of those moments for someone else with its five different specialty malts and this one very special hop. We made it entirely with US Challenger hops including a pound per barrel dry hop because we wanted to share the aromatic experience we had at the Hop Rub in Yakima with our customers."

22oz. bomber. Pours copper with small short lived cream colored head. Aroma is doughy with herbal hops. Medium mouthfeel. Crisp with balanced hop taste. For me, not too interesting but not a bad brew.

*backup review* Pours a fairly clear amber... only okay looking off white head... nice lacing. Aroma is a good mix of spicy/earthy hops and medium caramel and deep toasted bread. Nice bitterness balances a near perfect malt profile.... caramel malts and toasted biscuits ... Hops are pretty earthy .... a bit of fruity esters on the finish. Medium bodied with the expected lighter carbonation.

"Age? I dunno. Dusty, but otherwise not bad. Balanced crackers and piney earthy hops. Decent for the style but nothing to get excited about............."

Muddy brown with a decent tan head. Aroma is a bit sweet, a bit of toffee and toasted nuts. Flavor is a bit sweet, there’s notes of caramel and toffee and a touch of bitterness in the finish. It gets close to being a bit cloying for an ESB which is a bit unfortunate. A tiny amount of brightness from the hops. Not bad, but could be a bit cleaner on the palate. Wife: 3.6

Bottle shared by Tmoney99. Pours a clear deep amber color with a bubbly ring. Small head develops with agitation, but is quickly gone. The aroma is toasted malts, caramel, mild fruits, pithy with a small floral character. The flavor is more toasted bready malts, pithy, some fruits, dry, herbal bitterness to the finish.

Sample from firkin at the 6th Annual Rogue Firkin Fest at Green Dragon, dry hopped with Challenger. Pours a cloudy orange-amber color with a medium off-white head that recedes steadily. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of malt, tropical fruit and hops. Medium body with flavors of fruity hops and caramel malt, along with a bit of pine. The finish is fruity with a hoppy aftertaste. Decent overall.

Bottle - Pours hazy dark amber with a thin light tan head. Nose is bready and sweet caramel, lightly yeasty with a bit of herbal hops. Notes of orange marmalade. Taste has tons of caramel, nice mellow breadiness, and more orange marmalade. Nice fluffy body with decent carbonation. It’s a tad too sweet for me, but still pretty tasty.

From bottle to pint glass. Pours a hazy copper with little head. Aroma is of sweet, toasted caramel malts with little hop presence. Tastes of bready, toasted malts with a good sweetness balanced by a slight hop bitterness. MF is supremely smooth with low carbonation. Overall, I don't normally drink bitters but I thoroughly enjoyed this. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

A - Pours a hazy golden orange color with a finger of frothy white head. The head fades down at a normal pace leaving behind some nice lacing. S - Aroma is a mix of sweet caramel malts, nuttiness, fruity english yeast, and some citrus hops. T - Starts off with a mix of sweet caramel malts with some nuttiness, citrus hops, and bitterness. Through the middle, some fruity english yeast comes through with a bit of floral hops and a bit more bitterness. The finish is a mix of fruity english yeast, caramel malts, nuttiness, and bit of hops. M - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with a fruity and sweet finish. D - Very drinkable. Nice ESB with a bit of extra hops flavor.

bomber pours slightly hazy dark orange with frothy off white head. Aroma of cooked vegetables, butter, caramel. Flavor is malty, with hops present but somewhat muted, notes of water on the finish, light bitterness lingering. Medium bodied with watery feel. Not bad but expected a bit more from full sail.

Poured into a perfect pint. 3.5 A: Mildly hazed dark orange color. A little over one finger of frothy off-white head. Retention doesn’t quite meet average, but a small ring of lacing is left. 4.5 S: Solidly malty with a deep toastiness. A touch of yeasty breadiness. Good caramel presence. Fairly simple, but really nice. 4.0 T: Like the nose, this has only a few flavors, but they are done really well. Caramel, lots of toast, malty sweetness. Light bready yeastiness. 4.0 M: Heavier medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Savory light chewiness. Super smooth. 4.0 D: Well made beer. No faults and great flavors.
