| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jun 7, 2009 22 oz bottle. Pours clear dark brown, with a relatively small head. Aroma is mainly malt with a slight spiciness to it. Flavor is rich roasty malt, that has just a hint of smokiness. Mouthfeel is smoothy, with a bit chewy. There is a nice hop bitterness that lingers. I just didn’t think it is bad as everyone else seems to think. Chef Chad (102), Grand Junction, Colorado, USA
| 2.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 7/20 | Jun 1, 2009 well to be honest it is not that good.. has a herbal tea like quality to it that just does not work real well. I don’t mind the smoke on the back end in fact I think if they made it more strong it would really help this one out.. Bad beer from a average brewery.. too bad marctacoma (34), Fircrest, Washington, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | May 30, 2009 Pours a nice red amber, decent size cream/amber head. Plenty of lacing.
Initial taste is of full-on roasted barley. This fades to cola then to a nice hoppy/toasted malt finish.
This is agonizingly close to being a special beer. It’s not quite there. Still pretty tasty, though. SudsMcDuff (1868), was CapeTown,SA-now Houston, Texas, USA

TJ: Not really, no.
#1: You really should. "I have killed. I have helped kill. I have killed part of myself. I cannot change this. I... I must seek Buddha. I must seek Christ"
TJ: You must seek therapy. ..But that’s just where I would go with that.
Pours a ruby tan colour, very nice head with superb lacing .. . some aromas range from chocolate, grape juice, jelly/jam, light decorative soap, light sweet smokey werthers, etc, most transfer in the taste.... .. . Very easy to drink, smooth with an almost velvety mouthfeel .. . I bet on tap this is great said Capt. Leroy "Hotdog" Zanzibar .. . tasty stuff, but just outside the ring, needs to be sweeter or smokey or less alcohol or fuller, something... . good but not great but better than good, but still not great FlacoAlto (2485), Tucson, Arizona, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | May 24, 2009 As I pour this beer I get a mix of salty and fruity notes. A solid pour produces a three finger thick, amber tinged, tan colored head in my 25cl tulip glass. The beer is a dark amber tinged, plum color that shows a clear, cranberry red color when held up to the light. The aroma is quite fruity with a solid herbal hop note and a toasted dark malt character that backs both up; the dark malt notes contribute aromas of biscuits and some baked, brown sugar notes. The fruitiness is pretty much all up front with notes of plum, fig and raisin. As the beer warms it picks up some more spiciness.
The beer only has a light sweetness which accentuates a fruitiness, but there is almost a ripe, plum-like tartness. The beer finishes with a bit of hop and dark malt astringency. Actually this is quite hoppy with notes of light citrus, berry-hops, pine and menthol notes (these last two the most) as well as having a solid, lingering bitterness. The hop character actually makes it hard to pick up on all the malt complexity; it is not hopped like an IPA, but it is definitely hop leaning in the flavor. The malt character that is noticeable lends note of browned biscuits, toasted cracker flavors, and a sweet, but complex caramelized malt character. This has a medium body, that is still almost quite quaffable.
This is way too hoppy to be strictly within style, but it is quite a tasty beer. With this amount of hope character it actually could have used quite a bit more chewy malt character. marcus (1918), Sacramento, California, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | May 23, 2009 On tap at Toronado. This dark brown ale poured with a thin tan head and a smoky aroma. There is a nice smoked malt flavor with a touch of hop bitterness. Very tasty and somewhat underrated. douglas88 (1686), Salt Lake City, Utah, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 23, 2009 22oz bottle from the Utah State Wine Store. Pours a deep burgundy hue with a very large and thick beige head. A nice aroma of rich fruity malts, berries, juniper, lots of toasted notes. The taste is similar; subdued but nice, rich toasted malts, lots of fruitiness, berries and some herbs. Very earthy and light hops. I enjoyed this brew. A good example of the style.
