05: Aroma: anise, cardboard, vinegar, black olive. Flavor: harsh bite, strong hops, unbalanced, little malt. Very viscious. 5/4/6/3 3.3
03: Wow, this really settled down a lot. The harshness is completely gone, as are the hops. Unfortunately, it still wasn’t that great. Aroma was of a strong, funky cheese (ever had Chimay cheese?). Flavor was sweet and smooth, with lingering sweetness, and a good bit of sherry. It aged very well, but is not really something I’m too crazy about. Firemoose15 (542), Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, USA

The pour was a hazy amber color with a good head on it. The aroma was definitely sweet and malty. The taste was very sweet--too sweet for me--and the mouthfeel was too syrupy for my liking. Not terrible by any stretch--but not up my alley. If you like JW Lees stuff--then you would probably love this as well. jimhilt (1696), Bow, New Hampshire, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Aug 11, 2006 Pours a two finger cream head that fades quickly leaving some lace. Clear amber color. Light carbonation and medium bodied. Malty nose. Starts sweet, but hops assert themselves with the alcohol in the background, drying bitter aftertaste. $3.65 for the 2005 edition 22oz bottle from Liquid Solutions Tigard, Or. | 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 2/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Aug 10, 2006 I really wasnt all that impressed with this one. It was good but nothing I would seek out again. It was a yellow color which seemed off for barleywine, and the taste was of a dumbed down ipa or barleywine/ipa hodge podge. Overall not what I want from my barleywines. asteele8 (270), Mukilteo, Washington, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Aug 10, 2006 Bottle 2005. Poured a amber color with a small white head. Aroma is spicy, hops, alcohol, and some sweet smell. Flavor is bitter and sweet. Can taste some grapefruit in there. Malts are providing a sweet note throughout the taste. Mouthfeel is a little syrupy but I think it is done right in this beer. Not overwhelming at all. A decent barleywine.
