Commercial Description:
This smooth and fruity barleywine ale is a delicious brew to sip in chilly (or any) weather. Deep and robust, it is brewed using two-row Pale, Dextrin and Crystal malts, combined with flaked barley, to give it a strong malty body. Hopped with Willamette, Styrian, Goldings and Centennial hops, Old Boardhead Barleywine finishes with a pleasant hoppiness.

05 and 03 bottles shared with lukin and feedmecookies.

05: Aroma: anise, cardboard, vinegar, black olive. Flavor: harsh bite, strong hops, unbalanced, little malt. Very viscious. 5/4/6/3 3.3

03: Wow, this really settled down a lot. The harshness is completely gone, as are the hops. Unfortunately, it still wasn’t that great. Aroma was of a strong, funky cheese (ever had Chimay cheese?). Flavor was sweet and smooth, with lingering sweetness, and a good bit of sherry. It aged very well, but is not really something I’m too crazy about.

05 bottle thanks kenb. Aroma malty and light vine. Poured clean copper. Flavor was sweet light oaken, toasted malt and hoppy. Palate was okay nothing really to complain about. Overall it was okay, would like to try it again.

2004 Bottle. 2 year old bottle. Cherry red color. A cloud of white cream and a ring on top. Aroma is sweet and slightly alcoholic. Flavor is spicy, sweet and alcoholic. Nothing special. Whats the hype?

1999 vintage courtesy of BeerandBlues2. Thanks! I was a little let down with this one. The pour was a hazy amber color with a good head on it. The aroma was definitely sweet and malty. The taste was very sweet--too sweet for me--and the mouthfeel was too syrupy for my liking. Not terrible by any stretch--but not up my alley. If you like JW Lees stuff--then you would probably love this as well.

Pours a two finger cream head that fades quickly leaving some lace. Clear amber color. Light carbonation and medium bodied. Malty nose. Starts sweet, but hops assert themselves with the alcohol in the background, drying bitter aftertaste. $3.65 for the 2005 edition 22oz bottle from Liquid Solutions Tigard, Or.

I really wasnt all that impressed with this one. It was good but nothing I would seek out again. It was a yellow color which seemed off for barleywine, and the taste was of a dumbed down ipa or barleywine/ipa hodge podge. Overall not what I want from my barleywines.

Bottle 2005. Poured a amber color with a small white head. Aroma is spicy, hops, alcohol, and some sweet smell. Flavor is bitter and sweet. Can taste some grapefruit in there. Malts are providing a sweet note throughout the taste. Mouthfeel is a little syrupy but I think it is done right in this beer. Not overwhelming at all. A decent barleywine.
