COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A deliciously rich barleywine that has spectacular depth and delicacy of flavor that is deep and robust. Its strong, sweet body is balanced with Centennial and Crystal hops for a pleasant hoppiness and finish. Makes a great cellar beer. Available in 22oz. bottles and draught year round. ABV 9% IBU 91

Very sweet start with the malt, but very nice finish. Had this for many years, and its still a good barleywine.

Another beautiful barleywine with clear golden red color and head! A grapefruity/cookie dough aroma with notes of resin, caramel, vanilla, roasted malts and bubblegum. Crisp clean bitter finish with a sweet start. Damn nice stuff. Very drinkable for a barleywine.

UPDATED: AUG 4, 2006 99 Edition: Cloudy yellowish orange in color. Very fruity flavor, sort of reminds me of orange juice and plums? Its a wonderful blend what ever it is. It is sticky sweet. By a fire, after a great day of skiing this would be an excellent choice.

A nice medium bodied brew. Floral and citrus notes from the hopsand a maltiness to balance the 90 IBU bitterness level.

1999 sampled end of 2002. Bright red; richly malty, syrupy aroma...peach, toffee. Still a very syrupy body, with warming malt, peach, pear...alcohol underneath it all. Itís not that I donít like my barley wines malty (Old Woolly!) but this is a bit much, especially for its age. It should have developed some style by now - it takes more than big flavours to get over with me.

The only reason my ratings werenít any lower is due to believing that thereís a good beer beneath the one that a Colorado store improperly cellared. Must have been either in the light, in a hot warehouse or both. Very funky taste masking everything with underlying sense of malt flavor - hops destroyed. Damn ...

UPDATED: MAR 26, 2008 Bottle... This beer rocks!... Oh boy. After a night of mediocrity, this one hits the spot. Actually, the Full Sail Rip Curl was the only other non-mediocre beer. The aroma is intense. So many things in there. First off, itís fruity. Michigan cherries and dark fruits (dates, prunes). Very malty with notes of red wine and port. Also detected: vanilla, alcohol and saltwater taffy. A beautiful beer. Slightly hazy, ruby/copper-colored ale. Large yeast particles are there, but few and far between. The small, fizzy, khaki-colored head diminishes fully and quickly. No lacing. The flavor is complex. Malty/sweet and pungent up front with bursts of port and cherries. Tart and slightly bitter on the backside. Warm alcohol throughout. Full-bodied with an oily/silky mouthfeel. Soft carbonation. A short, dry, tart finish. The alcohol is there, but well-disguised. Excellent barley wine!

UPDATED: JAN 29, 2003 I just drank a bottle of the 2002 batch, and compared with the following rating of the '00, I was (surprisingly) a bit more impressed with the young bottle - less astringent, and a more overt maltiness covered up the alchohol a little better: much more flowery, and a whole load of flavors came through in the malt I didn't find before. 2000 (3.6) - I was a bit disappointed really. VERY modest barley wine: mildy sweet vanilla/chocolatey malt, slightly bitter, with a ton of astringent flavor. The astringent alchohol kind of turned my nose a bit, although I do think it was insationally smooth towards the end of the glass.

99 vintage... has aged very well.. unique complex flavors - hard to place exactly - maybe burnt caramel with a touch of vanilla? vanilla and caramel on the nose too... the finish lingers on and on.... definitely has a sweet note to it... the bottle says 91 IBU - but it seems much mellower... cloudy dark amber color... exceptional... just tried the 2001 - similar but maybe more wound up - age will definitely improve it. 2002 - alcohol content is slightly lower. perhaps a mellower batch, still quite nice
