A deliciously rich barleywine that has spectacular depth and delicacy of flavor that is deep and robust. Its strong, sweet body is balanced with Centennial and Crystal hops for a pleasant hoppiness and finish. Makes a great cellar beer. Available in 22oz. bottles and draught year round. ABV 9% IBU 91

The aroma is malty and alcoholic with plenty of hops. The appearance is light amber with an average head. The taste is like the aroma. The palate is smooth. Overall this is good.

You definitely want to drink this beer at room temp, chilled the smell and taste of alcohol was very strong. As it warmed up it was much smoother and more malty.

Vintage 2008 consumed on 4/27/09: Pours a deep ruby tinted amber with a great frothy white head on top. Retention is fairly good, and lots of spotty lacing all over the glass. Very pretty. Smells of red licorice, strawberries, bananas, and a touch of floral hoppiness. Very sweet smelling. Mouthfeel is nice and firm. Very easy to drink. Flavor is right off the bat full of hoppy goodness. Grapefruit all the way. As it warms this turns to sweet molasses flavor and toasted caramel. Wow. I was impressed with this beer. I got the 2007 as well, and I look forward to seeing how it compares. Recommend. [EDIT] Vintage 2007 consumed on 2/26/10: This bottle was also received from breity in a trade over a year ago. Thanks, Andrew! Poured into a tulip glass. Pours a very cloudy dark ruby/amber. Great frothy tan head on top. Retention was firm, and it left a good bit of sticky lace on the glass. Scents of molasses, soy, urine(?), and toffee. Different. Not as sweet as I expected. Great full-body on this one still. Carbonation level is spot-on. The flavors turned a bit harsh with this one. I thought this would be mellower, but it’s a little grating. Moderate-to-high bitterness. The sweetness is absent in the flavor as well. Expected more a toffee flavor, but instead I get some mild citrus, leather, and that bitter back end. Not too bad, but I enjoyed this more with just 1-year on it, instead of 3. Ah well.

Borwn amber with light bubbly head that disappeared quite eagerly, and left spotty lacing. A little stir of the glass re-ignites the head. Smells like dark roast malt, and a hint of red berried fruit. Taste is quite alcoholic, but a nice malty backbone that soon comes over.

Poured from 22oz bottle to brandy snifter: Pours a hazy apricot with a dissipating cap of tannish head and striking lacing. The aroma is much more malt-centric than I would expect. I was anticipating a very west coast, American barleywine but this features mainly dark, sweet malt. Caramel, toffee, reminiscent of an Old Ale. Nevertheless, it’s nice. The taste paints a different picture. The hops are on the front lines, supported by malt bits similar to those found in the nose. This one drinks pretty easy for the style. Pretty good.

The body is slight syrupy with prevalent alcohol. There are some nice malts but with bitter finish

Bottle from 2008 pours a brown with a bit of red white cream foam head. Smell and taste caramel, citrus, spruce, alcohol, light sweetness, medium bitterness, medium body, sticky, soft carbonation, not bad for the age still has a hop finish smoothed out bit off flavor might be too far past prime but still not bad.

Runner up in a four way blind barley wine taste. Pours a light tan. Smell is a bit mild, more malty and a bit of fruit. Not very carbonated. Spicy character. Mellow and almost sour hoppy. Pretty good beer.

Coles Barleywine Competition 2012. 2011 version. Oxidized, poor flavor & aroma. High carbonation. Probably bad bottle.
