Damn this beer was nice. Pours a beautiful dark amber color with a frothy khaki head. Smells of toffee, caramel and just a hint of booze. Full bodied. Flavors of caramel, toffee, dark fruit, nuts and some alcohol. Excellent beer.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
2011 bottle poured into a snifter amber with a thin whitish head.
Aroma is sweet brown sugar slightly burnt.
Flavor says barleywine yet the hops here says its more. Slight bitter finish. Balance is evenly sweet even aged almost 3 years. More than just good.

2012 Bomber. Clear red-amber, with modest, creamy, off-white head, light, fine lacing / Mild nose of caramel and cooked fruit / Medium body, syrupy with strong candied sweetness, but still nice balance, fruit with some bitterness on the finish / Flavors of candied grape & orange peel, spun sugar, caramel, pine / Very enjoyable, in this sweet & syrupy style.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Hazy amber pour with no head. Hops really evident in the aroma. Tastes very much like toffee and the hops come through and prolong the toffee nicely. Quite different.

Thanks to OldMrCrow for sharing two bottles of this one -- a 1999 (I was still in high school then!) and a 2005. The 1999 was off (aroma of prune stewed in soy sauce, taste not much different) so I’m ignoring it except to note that 15 years may be a bit long for this one. Both pour dark amber -- the 2005 still, surprisingly, has a nice white head. Don’t know why it amazes me that these stay carbonated, but it does. Magic! Aroma: toffee, old hops, some nice plum / toffee. Taste: nice toffee, reasonably dry, light caramel sweetness with just a hint of bitterness. Medium body. Overall: Very enjoyable!

2/22/2012. On tap at the brewery. Poured deep orange with an off-white head. Sweet malty aromas with caramel and light fruit. Hoppy flavors with fruit showing well and then the alcohol burn on the finish. Not bad at all.

1.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 6/20
Red hued copper ale with some yellow peanut foam rim and sheet quality. Excellent clarity leaving some spotty lace. Smells like a souped up Pale ale (english style) with some earthy, grassy hop profiles. A decent sugary toffee tone, but very subdued in the nose. The flavor follows thru with that tone, but is overpowered by a sulfur, ester, sweet alcohol flavor. The ingredients and quality characteristics of a Barleywine are soon forgotten in this beer. Medium bodied with low carb, and a semi dry finish. Not a drain pour, but not a good beer either.
Easily among the lower end of BW’s for me. I like ’em to have a little more malt character than this. Too many chemical flavors to make me happy. A disappointment.
