COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A deliciously rich barleywine that has spectacular depth and delicacy of flavor that is deep and robust. Its strong, sweet body is balanced with Centennial and Crystal hops for a pleasant hoppiness and finish. Makes a great cellar beer. Available in 22oz. bottles and draught year round. ABV 9% IBU 91

Bottle shared with HogTownHarry, blankboy, jerc & mabel - courtesy of blankboy. Ah, something good to wash the taste of the McCeol’s Red out of my mouth! Bright amber with a small head. Great aroma - sweet, boozy, notes of candied orange & plum pudding. Flavour is a bit of the aggressive side - the bitterness is nice at first, but it becomes a bit harsh a few sips in. Still enough sweetness there to give it some balance, though.

Coles Barleywine Competition 2012. 2011 version. Oxidized, poor flavor & aroma. High carbonation. Probably bad bottle.

22 ounce bottle from 2005. A malt bomb. The hops and age give this beer a fruity character. The carbonation gave an acidic tinge on my tongue.

2011 bottle on 01/27/2012. Biscuity, malty, caramel, dough, butterscotch, golden, clear, minimal head, light sweetness, lightly sour, thin feel, light body, long finish, simply AWESOME, can’t taste the alcohol, very well balanced with the hops.

This is the 2011 and probably would taste a lot different if aged. When tasting it the strong hop smell and flavor made me think it was an IPA. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle @ Dan’s house. Hazy reddish orange appearance with a tan head. Touch toasty malty, somewhat citrusy, earthy, lightly floral hoppy aroma. Floral, herbal hoppy, citrusy, fairly rich toasty malty flavor. I’m a little disappointed.

2010 Vintage courtesy of PaulUnwin. Pours a clear amber with a white head. Nose is light malt, floral hops, and a bitter white grapefruit and slight pine. Flavor is similar with some nice malt, bitter white grapefruit and some pine. Light in body for a barley wine, and finish lingers with citrus hops. Interesting barleywine.

Elwood (1834) - Between a rock and a hard place, Virginia, USA - NOV 8, 2011
Serving: 22 oz. bottle from State Line Liquors. It pours a slightly hazy, deep amber color with large off-white head. The head settles pretty quickly. The nose has notes of dried fruit, especially dried banana. Some yeast. The flavor has a nice dose of bitterness, but the fruitiness is the ringleader here. A nice cherry note comes out as the beer warms. The alcohol is a little on the obvious side, present in both flavor and feel. There is a nice breadiness to this brew. Full bodied with lower carbonation leading to a medium to long bitter yet bready finish.

Pours a clear amber color with a small khaki head. Nose is syrupy brown sugar, caramel malts, spicy hops and a touch of a dark berries. Flavor is light malt balance with a lot of hop character to it. A bit thin, metallic and boozy. It’s alright.
