On tap for Hard Liver í12, pours a murky dark orange with a small beige head. Aroma of bourbon barrels, toffee and caramel, dark dried fruits - the barrels are perfect on the nose. Flavour of vanilla, bourbon barrels, dark dried fruits with a slight sourness, and some toffee. Great mesh of flavours with great execution on the barrels. Excellent.

On tap at Brouwerís Hard Liver í12. Pours a dark orange. Grain, fruits, and bourbon on the nose. Lots of bourbon. Itís hot, itís fruit, and whatís that note... bubble gum! Bizarre. Tasty, but... hmm. Odd.

98 draft. cloudy opaque dull brown and orange body with a small off-white head. surprisingly bright nose for something thatís presumably been sitting in oak barrels for over a decade, and the expected signs of oxidation are happily absent. grain bill seems to have more pale malt than most vintages of boardhead iíve had (which were more dark caramel in color). though itís turbid and yeasty, the malt is succulent and decadently chewy, the hops balance the sweetness and both the level of alcohol present and the bourbon and oak flavors themselves are well-matched for the body, weight and sweetness of this beer. call me surprised, i wasnít in the mood for anything like barley wine and certainly wasnít feeling like bourbon barrelled barley wine, but this stuff impressed me. legit.

marcus (6365) - Sacramento, California, USA - MAY 15, 2011
1998 vintage on tap at Fredfest. Pours murky copper with a decent beige head anda fruity aroma. There is a delicious fruit, toffee and vanilla flavor that is mellow as can be. There is still some carbonation and a powder dry finish, and a subtle bourbon trail. This complex brew has aged very well.

Tap @ FredFest... Holy crap!!!! This was a buzz beer right from the gates. Half pours only allowed this to last about a half hour into the fest. Poured clear, golden with an off-white head. Despite being a 1998 vintage, this still had so much heat going. Lots of whiskey flavors, oak and wood tones, creme-brulee, malts, and big time sweetness.

98 vintage. Goodness. This beer was brewed when I got married. Thatís perspective. Sherry nose, amazed in the complexity between caramel and wood. Sublime, more impressed at how this beer as stood up, velvet as a fine port, melodic. Visceral. Wood note has crescendoed, and the bourbon seems to have become sweeter and condensed and taken on notes of cherry. Applause all around.
