I got this bottle from my Secret Santa this year. The pour is very dark with a thick fluffy head on top that leaves quite a bit of lacing. The aroma here is rather nice. Dark fruit and mocha scents are noted first. Bourbon and wood open up as it breathes a few seconds, with some underlying tobacco. The carbonation is lively and seems too high. The flavor uncovers what might be a slight infection. However, that seems more noticeable cold. As this warms, a silky mocha note blends nicely with wood, bourbon, tobacco, and a touch of soy. But there’s no doubt a slightly funky sour note but it doesn’t prevent me from enjoying this. I wouldn’t mind getting ahold of the regular version to compare.

2012 bottle. Smells of dark berries and a bit of booze. Comes off as much like wine as it does beer. Flavor is also vinous, with deep raspberry and plum. Bourbon comes out more as it warms. Probably could use some time.

Big Bottle. Poured a black color with full head. Immediate aromas of oak and bourbon, wet or old wood, some cocoa. Taste is slightly off. Starts off as sweeter stouut then oak bourbon flavors quickly kick in, followed by a slightly sour taste. This has potential but is not doing it for me. Not sure if the bourbon barrel aging hurt this one, or is the bourbon barrel againg trying to mask a not well done porter. A bit dissappointed, since I am a big fan of barrel aged beers. Good aroma, but taste could be better.

Bottle, 2012 Vintage. Pours opaque black with average, fizzy tan head; short retention and minimal lacing. Aroma is roast and caramel malts, plums, black cherries, bourbon, oak, earthy hops, vanilla, and light leather. Flavor is a balance of dark fruit esters and smooth, dark malts with bourbon and vanilla throughout; finish is dry and ashy with a hint of bittering hops. Medium/full body and low carbonation.

22oz Bottle. The pour was a murky dark brown almost black with an average (1-2 finger) medium brown creamy head that had great retention, eventually reducing to a thick puddled film and large collar, which in turn created some really awesome full sheets of lacing. The aroma was of a roasted dark bread malt, mild resin hops and a bold leathery yeast along with notes of chocolate, roasted coffee, vanilla, a bit of oak cask and a decent hint of bourbon. The taste was a roasty and malty with a nice chocolate sweetness from the beginning, slowly progressing with a slight coffee bitterness and a mild woody alcohol finish. The flavor lasted a decently long time following the swallow, with a nice roasty alcohol warming sensation lingering on. Mouthfeel was quite a few steps beyond medium in body with a oily and slightly dry texture and a soft carbonation. Overall this brew settled very nicely on the taste buds, allowing for a nice robust mocha coffee taste to take hold, which just left you wanting more while doing a great job of concealing the high ABV...

Location/Date:Bottle split with Dave on November 24th, 2012.

Appearance: Pours a dark opaque with light red head.
Aroma: Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, decent amount of bourbon.
Taste: Light bitterness, bourbon, faint roast, some chocolate.
Palate:Medium body.

Summary: Bourbon isn’t really my thing, but there was a solid balance in this one. Nice to try this and the regular imperial porter back to back.
