truegen (132), Puyallup, Washington, USA Mar 2, 2008 22oz. bomber. You know this came out of bourbon barrels right on the pour. Not much foam, but a nice tight lace down the glass. Rich, whiskey, dark fruit aroma with just a little wood. Smooth, dry, lightly semi-sweet chocolate flavor was a surprise. I was expecting a syrupy brew (which can be nice as well) and the lack of sap really leads you to explore the flavor more completely. Though my experience with the bourbon barrel beers is still limited, this is the best of them I’ve had so far. Magnificent stuff!
Guerde (443), Welcome, Minnesota, USA Jul 22, 2008 (bottle, thanks Sparky27!) Pours dark brown with a tan head. As Stine noted, this beer smells like german chocolate cake, with a lot of coconut present along with some oak and light anise as well. The smell is very nice. The taste was pretty disappointing though, with a ton of overly roasted malt that contributed a charred and astringent character to the flavor. These charred flavors dominated any hints of bourbon or chocolate that should be present. The finish was also heavily roasted, and the mouthfeel was thin to medium. 1_2many (142), Ohio, USA Jul 19, 2008 Bottle from bigmmartin. Dark pour, nice head and good lacing. Malty aroma with some smokiness. Sweet with a smooth finish making this very drinkable but not fantastic in any way. Bigmmartin (137), Dayton, Ohio, USA Jul 19, 2008 22oz Bottle from Douglas88. I think this is the first beer that I’ve had from this brewer. A nice surprise. Pours black, oily. Has a rich aroma of toasted malt. Flavor is a mix of sweet hints of caramel and more toasted malts. Has a bit of a bourbon, but nothing extreme. Well balanced, but slightly thin body. Not as full bodied as I expected from the appearance while pouring. Very nice porter though. zeke626 (194), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Jul 17, 2008 Bottle, thanks to Guerde for sharing. Pours a deep, dark brown with brown head. Aroma is mainly bourbon and cocoa with a hint of oak. Flavor is not as strong as the aroma and consists of bourbon, rich chocolate, roasted malts and tobacco. Mouthfeel is light for the style. OSLO (590), Minnesota, USA Jul 16, 2008 [Bottle, thanks Guerde!] Pours dark brown with a tan head. Aroma is very nice. German chocolate cake (Eben nailed that one), along with coconut and brown sugar. The taste is harsh, acrid roasted malt, bourbon, and a little bitterness. Pretty thin with an alright finish. Overall the aroma on this was good, but the taste was a huge letdown.
