3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours a deep copper color with a small off-white head. Aroma is sweet malt with some hops. Great lacing. Flavor is quite hoppy with some nice woody notes. Not as much spiciness as i expected but more bitter. Nice bitter swallow. Body is pretty dry. This is not bad.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Dark brown with an orange hue and thick, cream-colored head. The head disappeared rather quickly. Some good lacing for the top half of the glass. Some malty sweetness in the aroma with a good bite from the hops. Great mouth feel through the whole beer. Sweet malt flavors that finish with a bitter hops tingle on the tongue. Good beer.

2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
(Bottle) Pours a dark brown color with a medium tan head. Had a the flavors you would expect to find in a winter ale, but just not still not that exciting of a beer.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
My first beer of the night. Damn this is good. Aroma of bittering hops, chocolate malt, dust. Flavor is roasted barley, peanut shells, some coffee-ish flavors but not too intense, just right. Drying finish, good bittering hops. Really great beer.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle. Another hearty, spicy winter ale. Pours dark brown with garnet highlights and a full tan head that lingered casually. The aroma features rich roasted malts, plentiful hops and moderate spice. Flavor is also malty up front, giving way to spice cake, and piney hops with a slightly astringent finish. Medium body and mildly carbonated. Nice seasonal treat.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Aromas of malt, fruit (perhaps some cherry notes), and a subdued spice character as well. A brown ale with a thin tan head, that shows deep clear amber hues when held up to the light. Nice, pretty well balanced, though perhaps a tad thin. Lightly sweet in the front, with a bit of bitterness and spiciness in the finish. It is like a little brother to Deschutes Jubelale. Some definite cherry notes here. Really does remind me of a weaker version of the Jubelale. If I had not had that, I would think a bit more highly of this. Still this is pretty good.

Another pretty good holiday ale, they all sort of start tasting the same and this one is about par for the course.

Just finished up the 2003 Anchor and moved on to this. Actually I'm going to lower my rating of the Anchor a bit, because at the end, it was too dry, young, bitter and harsh. This one is kind of the same style as Anchor, but more toned down and more balanced. Aroma is more of a sweet malt rather than all spice. Palate might be a little more watery, but is maltier at the same time. Finish is a little spicy, but a little boring. It's easier to drink than the Anchor.
