Dark brown with yellowish shine. Full brownish head, lasting and lacey. Dark chocolate nose, sweet, fruity too (ripe plums, succade). Taste is very bitter, hops and bitter chocolate. Deep. Very full bodied, much more than expected from 6.5 ABV. Very long lasting aftertaste; bitter chocolate gets streamlined with the malt to a beautiful finish. Can’t help but like this beer.

UPDATED: JUL 24, 2013 Clear dark amber with a light tan head. Rich toffee’d plum juice, some burnt caramel and wet oak. Divine chewiness, robustness and a touch of roast, amazing all around, warming, relaxing, satisfying.

Clear dark copper, thin beige head. Yeasty, figgy, spicy aroma and flavour along with some dark caramel. Finish is surprisingly bitter. Very nice.

This brown ale poured with a slight tan head, eliciting a malty aroma. The initial flavor is spicy, almost medicine-tasting, with a bitter hoppy finish. A very unique, but slightly unpleasant brew.

Bottle. Pours a very dark ruby color with a medium light tan head that diminishes quickly. The aroma is a roasted malt with some fruit. Good lacing on the glass. The taste is a very sweet malt with a spicy hop finish. A great ale for the winter.

Bottle. Mahogony-brown color with a nice off-white head. Roasted malt and slight grapefruit hop aroma. Nice balanced malt and hop flavors along with spice, caramel, fruit, and brancy. Lingering bitterness.

Bottle bought at the Utah State Wine Store. Pours a brown, almost purple color with a small white head. The aroma is light; some floral hops and light nuts and plum. The taste is quite hoppy; also some rich caramel malts, some prunes and other dark fruit and a light pine flavor. Some bitterness in the finish. Wow, this is 7%, I had no idea since it is very smooth. Some spices and a bit of brown sugar also. A very nice beer that as got me thinking about winter, well it did snow last weekend already.

[3665-20110403] 12floz bottle. Mildly floral grains aroma has a little wet malt thing going on. Slightly hazy, dark amber brown body with a medium-lasting foamy light tan head. Grainy wet malt flavour is a little harsh. Medium body. Interesting to sample but would not want a pint. (5/3/6/3/11+) 2.9

12 oz bottle courtesy of Degarth. Pours deep amber with assertive bubbly to creamy tan head. The aroma is a mixture of highly roasted malts, mild dark fruity esters, molasses and an herbal note. Overall the aroma is pretty light. The taste is just like the aroma with roasty malts, mild dark fruity esters, some mild coffee, chocolate malts and a bold brash earthiness. These notes create an enjoyable superposition of flavors. Certainly a nice warm up during the winter.

Not my favorite ESA. 2008 Bottle. Pours with a extremely large, light brown head. Extremely dark brown body. Good lacing. Aroma of roasted nuts, meat, cinnamon, spices, hay and a few persimmons. Taste is rotten fruits, a bit metallic, some spices, oatmeal, raisins, a bit of alcohol and a couple of weak hops. Creamy mouthfeel, moderate carbonation.
