On tap at Tapwerks. Pours a clear brown with a touch of amber and a brown head that dissipates slowly to the edges. Aroma has earthy grains and light spice with a hint of grassy hops. Flavor is similar with earthy dark grains and light spice but not much of a hop profile.

This brown ale poured with a slight tan head, eliciting a malty aroma. The initial flavor is spicy, almost medicine-tasting, with a bitter hoppy finish. A very unique, but slightly unpleasant brew.

Aroma Pleasant blend of hops with hints of alcohol paired with sweet malt aromas. Top hints of light gourmet chocolate.7+
Appearance brown with amber light. Light creamy top. 3+
Flavor and Palate : Full bodied. Woody hop character is evident in its malty flavor base. Oily texture with drying alcohol. Felt as it was stronger than listed 7%. Quiet good.

Sample from a bottle at Cincinnati Winter Beer Fest (CWBF) 2013. Last one of the night. Kind of rushed this one, a drunk friend had just spilled beer on my notebook and I was writing around the wet spots. Clear brown. Decent khaki head. Spice, toasted malts. Smooth, ligther carbonation. More dry texture. Moderate spice. Solid spice ale. Light bitter. Light sweet.

Bottle pours deep dark amber, almost brown, medium frothy off-white head, attractive lacing, with light carbonation. † Musty, malty, peppery nose. † Smooth hop bitterness up front, some licorice, with a malty backbone. † Some odd hemlock like tree flavor as well, or is it sagebrush? † Medium body and mouthfeel. † Light spices emerge on the finish. † Fairly smooth, not as hopped up as I would have thought. † Finishes herbish, slight hop, minor malt, semi-sweet.   Very different from most other Winter seasonals I have had.

Bottle. Very dark brown pour with a smaller soapy off-white head. Nose is roasted malts and a hint of caramel sweetness and spice. Medium palate - decent weight. Taste is mild roast, dark fruit, a touch of caramel, and a hint of spice. Very nice.

Ernest (6219) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - NOV 21, 2002
UPDATED: JAN 6, 2013 Bottle. Head is initially average sized, frothy, off-white, mostly lasting. Body is medium brown. Aroma is moderately malty (toasted bread/nuts, caramel), lightly to moderately hoppy (grapefruit, apricot), with notes of dried papaya/mango and black tea. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately to heavily bitter. Medium to full body, velvety/watery texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic. Surprisingly good for this brewery...balanced (in both nose and mouth), flavorful, nicely textured, attractive, etc. Quite nice, although itís certainly more American-styled than British (classified as an English Strong as of this writing).

Pour out of 12 oz bottle dark blackish red pour with tan head, aroma brought notes of caramel, toffee, roast malts, some slight biscuit, bread, dark fruits, caramelized sugars, nice spice with clove, slight cinnamon as well, slight earthy and spicy hops as well. Taste is spicy up front with cinnamon, clove, some cherry juice and dark raisin go into dark toffee, caramelizes sugars, dark fruits with a hint of earth, finishing fairly bitter and dry. Pretty nice, like the way this was crafted.
