3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 DiabolikDUB (147) - Portland, USA - JUL 31, 2009
On-Tap @ Bailey’s Taproom poured into Shaker glass. Winter in July.
Pours a murky deep copper color with a finger of tan colored head that never fully dissolves and remains a heavy layer atop the glass through-out the session. The aroma is toasted malts, spices and some earthy hops. The flavor has similar notes with toasty malts and nuts, slight brown sugar and some other spices. Wassail has a creamy medium body. The hops are more present in the aroma than in the taste which actually makes sense, since this was a dry-hopped version of the Wassail. The flavor is nice but could use some more noticeable hoppiness.

Head is small, fizzy, light tan, with no lacing but good legs. Color is dark mahogany. Flavor starts lightly sweet and moderately acidic, then finishes lightly acidic and moderately bitter. Palate is medium, watery with livley carbonation and finishes lightly alcoholic. A nice winter warmer and a good representation of as Strong English Ale.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Scrapersnbeer (461) - Boston, Massachusetts, USA - JAN 21, 2012
The Wassail is a very dark brown with tan head when aggressively poured and sticky lacing. At first I thought it might be a bock but it’s too thick and roasty for that. Chocolate malt aroma with a hint of alcohol. Medium sweetness out front and a nice balancing dry bitterness. Heavy bodied and cloying, though the hop flush prevent it from bogging down. Wish it was year ’round.
