Pours a deep hazy red with a big white head and good lace.
The aroma is toasty malt, some red apple, some sweet toffee, a little bit of lavender & light chocolate.
The flavor is nicely earthy and surprisingly bitter with a good leafy hop expression, plenty of toasty malt, and some light caramel. The beer is lightly spicy and in no way is it overly sweet.
A nice beer, certainly different from what I was expecting.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 MacMoney (323) - Espoo, FINLAND - DEC 22, 2011
Bottle. Pours an auburn mahogany with a small, large-bubbled, yellowish-brown head. Aroma is caramel, marmelade, candied/dried fruit, candied orange zest, resin. Taste is resinous, some pine, caramel, tones of nuttiness. Aftertaste is wood, some resin and pine. Palate is nice and medium. Not as good as I expected. English strong ale probably isn’t my style, it seems.

1845 is a dark mahogany amber with a yellowish beige head atop. Thick bands of sticky lacing are left on the glass. The nose is well malted with noticable biscuity Crystal and Maris Otter malts. Notes of toffee, bread, fruitcake and a rich biscuit. A hint of hop on the nose is quite subtle. My first taste was rich and complex with a nice toasty middle. A lingering aftertaste of light hops, nutmeg and allspice and a nice alcohol. Notes of candied fruits and raisins with a light brown sugary sweetness are overcome by the dry, hopped up spice finish. 1845 is medium to full bodied with a slightly sticky mouthfeel. A good amount of fizzy carbonation on the tongue. Overall, this is a fantastic brew with very atypical flavors.
3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 1/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 14/20 AndrewC (256) - Canterbury, Kent, ENGLAND - DEC 13, 2011
Bottle conditioned: Nice initial aroma of candied fruit. Excellent mouth feel, soft and warming. Nice malty body with red fruit and candied fruit jostling away. Terrible finish though. ...like liquefied horse chestnut. Hides the alcohol well though.
3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Benjii (1681) - Edinburgh, SCOTLAND - DEC 13, 2011
Bottle from Waitrose for the UK Mass Tasting. Pours a beautiful ruby colour with a thick, light tan head. Aroma of apple seed, yeast, alcohol and dried fruits. Flavours of prunes, treacle and barley with a dry apple seed linger. Quite bitter with a nice warming alcohol hum. Moderate carbonation and a little CO2 prickle. OK.

50 cl bottle @ home, BBE 02.11.2012
A bit thin aroma with toffee, grainy malt and some metal. Flavour is sweetish and rather malty with toffee, some metal and grain. Hops feel a bit harsh here. Smooth palate.
