I first tasted this beer in 1995, or was it 1845? Canít remember but it was long ago. I didnít care much for the aftertaste at the time, coarse hops and very bitter. Jump on several years and the local supermarket has an offer on too good to miss. Bottle conditioned, 6.3%, Fullerís - ticks all he right boxes so I thought Iíd give it another try. Well, what a beer, glorious! Real ale in a bottle. Massive fruit & malt, perfectly balanced, some citrus, yeast & burnt toffee. Thereís something about the aftertaste Iím not liking still but this dissipates slightly the older it gets. Nevertheless, this is an amazing brew by todayís standards and one I canít imagine being without for so long ever again.

Bottle@home. Christmas present from my niece brought back from the UK...thanks Kristine:-). Brown ales and strong ales are basically not my favourite kinds of beer, but I must admit that this one gave me pleasure as a winter warmer. Lots of nicely balanced roasted malt, plum, raisin sweetness with spices. Very satisfying and filling. To be enjoyed slowly and not too cold. I have always rated Fullers highly as a brewery and this brew only adds to their reputation as far as I am concerned.

Bottle from Waitrose. Pours a deep mahogany in colour with an off white head. Aroma of roasted malts, dark fruits, biscuit. Taste of initial roasted malts, some biscuit too, then dark fruits, licorice, touch of spice, lovely finish too. Great body, steady bitterness through the beer, finish of light bitter fruity taste. Very good!

Bottle from Booths, Media City. Copper-red with a small head. Thereís chocolate in its nose, with a nice chocolate-malt flavour in its taste.

Pours a clear, deep mahogany with a light tan head. The smell is dark roasted malt, licorice, dark fruit. The taste is rich dark malt, licorice, some spice, dark fruit, molasses ending dry and rich. Medium bodied with a fine carbonation. Overall, a nice rich beer with a lot of flavor.

I was a bit disappointed with this one. I love nearly all of the Fullerís beers and this one is so highly rated, but it just wasnít for me. Far too sweet. Indeed it tastes like a fruit cake, but I didnít enjoy that. The alcohol is hidden, but I definitely wonít be coming back to this one any time soon.

Cerveja forte, não tão fácil de beber. Toque de café no aroma e no sabor. Espuma amarelada e extremamente encorpada

Bottle, found accidentally underneath the bottom shelf (on the floor) at a local crap-beer store, covered in dust, no idea how old it is, but best before September 2012! Lightly clouded light brown with a medium-coarse tan head that fades a moderate rate. Aroma is white raisin, prune, sweet pear, desert bread, toffee. Body is medium-medium-light, oily-watery, slight grit. Flavor is light toffee and raisin bread, some apple juice, bitter grasses in the finish, slightly astringent unfortunately.
