In short: An exemplary English Strong Ale. Big but smooth fruity maltiness, almost no hops presence and highly drinkable. Very good
How: Bottle. Consumed relatively fresh two months after purchase
The look: Clear amber-ruby body topped by a medium beige head
In long: As with most typical English strong ale this beer is all malts with little hops presence. Toffee, caramel, dark fruits (raisins, figs, etc.), molasses, grape juice, wild berries, etc. Finish is all fruits with almost no bitterness. Despite the little hops presence the beer doesn’t feel really sweet. This is a rich and smooth English strong ale. Nothing original but this beer is highly drinkable. Body is unexpectedly thin yet the beer feels really nourishing. First brewed in 1995 for the 150th anniversary of the brewery reminding us that the English have been brewing good beers for over 150 years but have yet to learn to cook a half-decent meal.

Best before 30/SEPT/02, Poured a reddish amber color with a large light tan head that had small creamy bubbles. Aroma smelled was musty with a hint of light fruit and grape bubblegum. Dry hoppy flavor but as I worked my way down the glass it turned to a sweet alcohol taste to it. Given the reviews I had higher hopes.

500ml Bottle: Aroma of biscuity hops, malts, caramel, slight graham cracker, toasting, and a hint of tobacco. Quite pleasant. Poured amber in color with a small, rocky, loose, tan head that lasted throughout. Clear. Sparkling. Fully of tiny particles throughout. Lightly sweet, lightly bitter aroma. Tastes of hops, biscuit, toasting, malts, sourdough, and resin. Medium body. Average texture. Average carbonation. Malty, biscuity, finish turns resinous.

UPDATED: AUG 12, 2006 (Bottled) Deep, dark red/amber color with a medium, off-white, foamy and lacy head. Mild, caramely and malty aroma with woody and nutty hops. Roasted-malty, caramely flavor with a long, dry, woody-hoppy finish. Sticky, bitter and dryish mouthfeel. Medium-bodied with soft carbonation. Surprisingly roasty, dry and full for a British ale with features from porters and dry stouts. Not bad at all.

Crazy thick head. Tart, syrupy taste similar to Arrogant Bastard but with less bite. Sweet aroma. Very good!

BottleHoneyish malt and soft hop aroma. Brownish amber, low carbonation, creamy brown head. Cookie malt and some burned toast flavors topped off with a jolly good portion aroma hops. Medium body, sparkling mouthfeel. Extremely satisfying brew.

Poured with an awesome dark brown hue, and large-bubbled foam top. Pleasant warm aroma, followed by an very good hoppy, wood-chip flavor with a hint of smoke and tight bitter finish. Excellent ale.
