Caramel malt aroma with plenty of spicy, citrusy, earthy hops and lots of raisin-like fruity esters. Clear amber-brown with immense and lasting, pillowy, tan head. Chocolate caramel flavour with a wonderful, crisp bitterness. Medium body and low carbonation. Very easy to drink. Alcohol never apparent. Bottle.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 larsga (4435) - Oslo, NORWAY - JUL 6, 2008
Big deep offwhite shiny lasting head. Dark brown body made hazy by suspended yeast particles. Fruity malty aroma with peppery roasty toffee notes. Deep rich sweet intensely malty fruity taste with roasty peppery toffee and chocolate notes. Dry wooden minty roasty aftertaste with faint hoppy notes. Some sherry/paper notes, probably from oxidization. Long spicy aftertaste of wood creosote. Harmonic and balanced. Lovely! An excellent beer. (0.5l bottle, Systembolaget, Göteborg. BBD 2009-08-14.)
4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 muzzlehatch (4425) - Burlington, Vermont, USA - JUL 29, 2001
Outstanding English ale; nose is rather faint, but pleasing in its spiciness, which is echoed in the hints of cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg in the flavor. Gorgeous head and color, nice finish.

500. Pours crystal clear ruddy brown with a thick, rocky, moussy, creamy, towering tan head--it goes through virtually every known phase of head appearance as it piles up in the glass, shoving beer out of the way as it goes. Nice sweet plummy nose, with a little bit of booze sticking its head in, too--odd, for 6.3%. Body’s on the light side of medium, almost a little watery in places, with very understated carb. Nice rich woody, leathery mid-palate with crisp but mild hop resin near the finish. Nice lingering resiny finish. This is really dandy stuff.
4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 blankboy (4285) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - JUN 30, 2005
Bottle. It was with great hesitation that I cracked open one of the four bottles I have left from last winter to rate it. It did not dissapoint. Pours a hazy reddish-brown with a large, long lasting, frothy off-white head. Aroma of caramel, fruit, raisins, citrus, apple, berries, spice, roasted malt, yeast and more. Looks and smells great! Palate has some hop bitterness. The flavour follows the aroma: roasted and sweet malts, dried fruit and hops. This is really a world class beer and one my favourites. I will cherish the three I have left and hopefully I’ll be able to get more.
2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 ogivlado (4275) - Zagreb, CROATIA - MAR 25, 2011
Bottled 500ml. - from the London Pride store in Ljubljana, shared with Marko.
Clear amber coloured, medium sized off-white head that went away slowly, malty nutty nose. Slight roasted malt, moderate coffee and nutty with hint of oranges near the finish. Short and pretty empty finish. Pitty for this one. Overrated a lot.
