3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 ClarkVV (3578) - Allston, Massachusetts, USA - AUG 1, 2003
UPDATED: APR 11, 2007 Deep chestnust brown with some lighter blonde hues as well as some red tints. Smells of alcohol, pepper and hops.
Has a small lacey head of beige/light brown.
Begins somewhat sweet and I am thining, lots of fruit, but then out of nowhere, the body shifts gears and towards the finish I am tasting tons of hops. This beer makes the Vintage Ale seem like a unbalanced mess in comparison. This is supremely balanced, very soft and perhaps not as challenging, but magnificently flavored and balanced. Tastes of cherries, oak, and has a nice deep dry hops flavor that comes out. Alcohol flavor is hinted at and by no means dominant. The initial taste has some zesty spices, not heavy, almost tending towards herbal/licorice, but sweeter and more caramel/candied. Well I liked this beer, and it is certainly a nice alternative to the much more stern and alcoholic Vintage ale from Fullers
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 drowland (3568) - Tallahassee, Florida, USA - NOV 28, 2009
Pint bottle into an English pint glass. Pours amber/red with a thick and tight khaki head. The aroma is dusty malt with a hint of sour fruits. The flavor is minerally hard water and metal with malty bitterness, lots of biscuit, some citrus, and a chocolatey finish. The mouthfeel is big and creamy and the glass is covered with lace.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 mar (3547) - Dallas, Texas, USA - NOV 11, 2009
Cloudy dark amber with a foamy cream head. Nuts, roast, chocolate and dark malts on the nose. Nice on the palate with a nutty chocolate flavor and a roasted finish.

A: Pours a dark copper amber with a nice two-finger off-white head. Quite a few rings of lacing as it goes down.
S: Strong whiff of caramel malts alongside some initially-unidentifiable spices, almost reminding me of Samuel Smith’s Winter Welcome. Somewhat earthy. Hints of orange marmalade.
T: A nice, brisk hop presence; slightly herbal and earthy. Very nice caramel malt in the background, with a mild amount of spice. Slightly sweet. Still having trouble identifying the specific spicing--perhaps the orange marmalade I detected in the nose.. Mild hints of tobacco and a very slight green apple skin presence.
M: Medium bodied with a moderate, brisk carbonation. No detectable alcohol presence. Chewy and biscuity.
D: Although certainly not within the English definition of sessionable, this is one incredibly drinkable brew. Nice balance between earthy hops, fruity esters, and caramel malt.

Bottle. Big airy tan head. Beautiful shiny deep amber colored body. Excellent lacework. Strong nutty malt aroma with notes of caramel, dark fruits and earthy hops. Taste is full malty and has an inviting sweetness. Dark fruits and spicy tones, and more earthy bittering hops. Well-bodied. Balanced and smooth. Fine bitterness in the finish.

UPDATED: NOV 9, 2011 Rerate, 500 ml bottle conditioned, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 6.3%. Reddish brown colour, moderate cream-coloured head. Aroma as in original rating. Lovely and initially sweet flavour with malty and fruity notes, spicy and distinctly hoppy dry finish and aftertaste. I’m upping it a point. Original rating: 500 ml bottle conditioned, trade with maeib. Orange to brown colour, decent peachy to beige head. As I’ve had many British ales with excellent aroma lately, I kind of expected the 1845 to be equally good. It’s not, but that doesn’t mean the aroma is bad either. Moderate fruitcake and caramel aroma on a hoppy background. The flavour is malty with some spices and decent hops, but not VERY complex. The ABV is evident, but alcohol does not dominate the flavour. Hoppy bitterness in the aftertaste. A decent beer, but not the best I’ve had.

500 ml bottle thanks to Nate. Pours a dark copper color with a medium white head. The aroma is certainly like fruit cake, some raisins and alcohol. The flavor is dry caramel and sweet fruity malts, berries and a hint of bitter hops in the finish, lots of flavor, some port like qualities, warm, interesting. A nice brew.
