4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 PilsnerPeter (2958) - Flushing, New York, USA - JUL 19, 2006
UPDATED: JUN 16, 2008 I was impressed with this ale. Nice brown/orange color with an off-white creamy head. Immense malt character with chocolate flavor and a peppery element. Has notes of bitter fruits. The strong hop finish balances the extreme malt charcter. Very enjoyable ale.

500ml bottle from BevMo Carmel Mountain. Pours a dark, slightly hazed amber. Medium sized beige head with decent lacing. Nose of candied fruits, caramel, honey, some hops as well. Somewhat dry ond smooth on the palate. A great english brew!
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 DarkElf (2938) - La Jolla, California, USA - MAY 31, 2006
(500 ml bottle: $3.99 at BevMo in La Jolla, CA) I’ve let this age in my darkened, cool bedroom for many months, long enough that I’ve exceeded the supposed Best By date of 06-Jan-06 by four months. No matter, this flavorful English ale is delicious. Malty, roasty, chocolaty, and lightly smoky, but balanced by a moderate hop bitterness that makes its presence known in the crisp finish and then remains on the palate for the rest of the session. For an English beer that’s seen this much aging, I’m pretty impressed by how much bite the hops has retained. While the malty and chocolaty nose is reasonably aromatic, it really doesn’t compare to the flavor, not even in enjoyment. Medium-full bodied with a nice, round mouthfeel and playful carbonation. Dark amber in color and fairly cloudy, but there is still a good amount of muddy sediment remaining in the bottle. The tall, beige head shows exceptional retention, never dipping below a quarter inch, and it deposits a thick, dense blanket of foamy lace on the glass. There used to be a time when I didn’t care for this beer (okay, it was relatively soon after I started drinking "good" beer), so I haven’t bought any since then. I’ve really been missing out because this is an excellent beer. Glad to have rediscovered it.

500ml from Rodman’s, D.C. A younger cousin of the Fullers Vintage is my basic impression of this one. A full bodied amber pour, the nose is big and spicy with some lush caramel malts in there as well. Very nice smooth palate, with mellow malts, not too sweet at all.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Strykzone (2906) - Wood River, Illinois, USA - OCT 26, 2007
A huge head greeted me upon pouring this beer. The foam is light tan and the body is the color of dark honey. Waiting on the head to subside is misery because the beer looks so inviting. Aroma is very malty with fruit and coffee. Flavor is loaded with malt and bitterness. It is a delicious beer and provides more warming than the 6.3% ABV should. As well as malt there are lots of dark fruit, toffee, and spice flavors. This is a nice looking, smooth, flavorful, great smelling beer. What more should be said?

A good beer, but nothing amazing. Pours a brown/red. Has a very standard beer aroma with some fruit and chocolate. Flavor of strong generic beer, dried fruit, and a little chocolate. Kind of a peppery taste with a good amount of bitterness.
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 mjs (2865) - Helsinki, FINLAND - DEC 8, 2011
(Bottle, 0.5 l - BBE 02 NOV 12, 20111208) The beer poured mahogany coloured and clear. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had malts, dark fruits, dried plum and raisins. Palate was full bodied and quite dry with medium carbonation. Flavours were malts, dark fruits, caramell, herbalness and bitterness. Afertaste was malty, raisiny and bitter. A good tasting English Strong Ale. I wish I could have tasted the real ale version when it was available in Helsinki.
