3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 jcr (1621) - Jasper, Indiana, USA - JUL 2, 2006
Dark amber color with a small, light-tan head. Enticing malty nose that hints at sweet caramel, fruits with a slight touch of earthiness. The flavor starts sweet — breads, caramel, nuts — until the hop flavor punches through with a tasty bitterness. Medium body, smooth feel. Fairly long, dry and bitter finish. Very enjoyable.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Goodgrief (1608) - Middletown, Delaware, USA - MAY 9, 2008
Beer pours deep amber color with some head. The aroma is caramel and diacetyl. The flavor was a rich and complex blend of toasty bready malts, sweet caramel malts, spices and even a little grassiness. There was that butteriness, too, that wasn’t flattering and kept the beer from really being clean. A bitter hop finish attempted to balance things out, but not sure it succeeded. All in all, a pretty good example of the style.

New Beer Distributors, NY 16.9 oz ($5): Pours a darkish amber color with a short-lived creamy off-white head; however, the remnants of said head linger for quite a whiles. Aroma is pleasant, hops are most upfront, followed by an underflying fruitiness. Of course tasty malts are present. Anyway, the taste of this beer is one reminiscent of many IPAs. Hops are a strong force, especially for a British beer, but are very well balanced with the malts. Nicely bitter, but exactly enough that it doesn’t impede repeated sips. When I drink beers like this I think that this is exactly what I would a beer to taste, if I were to only have to drink one beer. Quality stuff.
