Rusty colored with a nice frothy head. Lots of lace. Aroma of toffee, caramel, and malt. Tastes of caramel, dark fruit, molasses. Very full of flavor and pretty complex. Lightly carbonated and very creamy.

UPDATED: DEC 30, 2006 Pilllowy tan head sits atop a rich brown pour that is tinted with copper and reddish highlights. The aroma is above average. Hops, sweet malt, spice and dried fruit are quite pleasing. Spice, slight roasted malt and fruit dominate the flavors. The palate is of a medium bodied brew without too much carbonation and a pleasant finish that is hops and alcohol.

Deep color with a very large head when poured. Deep strong flavor with alcohol evident.

GarethYoung (1109) - Glasgow, SCOTLAND - JUN 14, 2005
UPDATED: JUN 1, 2006 [bottle from sainsburys] pours an amber/brown colour. Nose has a complex malty character, layers of honey, toffee, bread and dark fruits are undercut with a restrained fruit yeastiness and a background hop presence. full bodied, sweet upfront, leading to a dry finish and a touch of bitterness.

deep copper color with a light tan head. earthy malt aroma, rutabaga-like hoppy aroma too. flavor is dry malt and bitter hops, some sweetness from the malt depth but also earthy and root-vegetable like.

UPDATED: AUG 3, 2006 A delightful brew. Nearly perfect bitter hop/roasted malt balance. Head is initially frothy. Color is a deep amber hue. Finish is fruity. Definitely the best English Strong that I have ever had out of a bottle.

UPDATED: MAY 23, 2011 Must re8 , thAt aroma is good shit...complex and rich , fruitcake , fugggles and burnt notes . Powerful , deeply malty and once upon a time my favorite beer on earth.4 score(r8_) it looks beautiful ...smells of earthy hops..fruitcake..cuban cigars...and obese malts. in the mouth its rich , treacly jamish and with a burnt nuttiness. notes of chocolate ..earthy hops with floral accents bring back good memories. The palate is less full bodied than I recall , so just a 3 there . A cultured bottle conditioned beer..

UPDATED: MAY 3, 2004 Dark brown medium head, stron hops and malts in the nose. Kind of musty actually, but more of warm not moist or damp must. Smooth with currants on the taste, bitter and hoppy on the finish.

Great beer! Beautiful head. Very complex yet it all came together and went down smooth. Not as good as the ESB in my opinion.
