Bottle. Finally, the lcbo gets one right! Dark orange pour. Malty aroma, with a head that sticks to the glass. Warm alcohol and malt taste in a medium type body that has decent carbonation. As it warms, much more spiciness and edge of your tongue hop bitterness come forward. If this were available in cask over here, I wouldn’t be typing, I’d be on my way. Lovely.

Beautiful clear mahogany with a thick beige head. Aroma of caramel, butterscotch, toffee, dark fruits, apple, bread and alcohol. The flavor offers more of the same along with toasted malt, molasses, spiciness, a big dose of bitter hops, raisins and plums. Bitter hoppy aftertaste with a slightly burnt tinge. Very full, round and creamy on the palate with lively carbonation. Great lacing and AWESOME, thick head retention. Great stuff.

Bottle from Whole Foods, Cary, NC. Pours deep copper with medium off-white head. Aroma corn flakes, caramel, dark fruit. Tastes malty, caramelly, with finishing fruit and nuttyness. Dense, smooth, velvety palate. Great complexity and balance. One of my great surprises of 2005.

Damn, this is a great beer. It’s a fantastic rich, chewy beer that tastes kind of like caramel sponge cake in a glass. It is quite sweet, but countered with a hint of hops. Smooth, delicious.

Rather than use pretentious terms to describe this beer, or quote the BJCP guidelines, I’m just going to say that this beer has the power to restore your faith in mankind. The fact that something of such incredible quality and attention to detail is still being produced in this age of “cheap and good enough” is indeed worthy of the highest praise. If you are mad about cascade hop-bombs, this will not be for you but I encourage you to try it anyway. It is truly one of the eight or ten finest beers on earth.

500 ml bottle. Pours a murky reddish brown with a thick off-white head. Pleasant aroma of herbal hops. The taste is complex, with tones of juicy, roasted malt, salted liquorish and more. Excellent balance between bitter hops and sweet malts. Truly a great brew!
