COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask: Regular (but not permanent). Also available bottle conditioned (at 5.3%).

NOTE: Originally developed for Systembolaget in Sweden as the 5.3% bottle conditioned version of Fullers India Pale Ale in 2009. Also released in bottles into some other export markets under that name at around the same time. Subsequently launched in the UK as Bengal Lancer and exported at 5.3% in bottle conditioned format to certain export markets under that name. The bottled version of Bengal Lancer and the 5.3% bottle conditioned version of India Pale Ale are the same beer, as is the slightly weaker 5.0% cask version. See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDQNyaNLkQc for explanation.

Bengal Lancer is an exciting, classic India Pale Ale from Fuller’s. Brewed to 5% ABV (5.3% in bottle), this ale has been inspired by the history and character of this traditional style of beer.
Bengal Lancer has returned to pumps for an extended period between Autumn 2011 and Spring 2012.
The beer is pale in colour, full-bodied with a distinctive hoppiness that marks it out as a true India Pale Ale.

Had the IPA Bottle conditioned 5.3%. Starts off smelling grainy any fruity. Shockingly smooth considering how bitter this beer is.

500 ml as Fullers India Pale Ale 6,3% bottle sampled in 2009. Dark golden body with a nice off-white head. Clear, deep golden body with a nice off-white head. Mild aroma of caramel malt with a hint of grassy hops. Flavor is sweet caramel malt, toast and moderate bitterness. Medium body and moderate aftertaste. Quite average.

Pours a friendly shade of amber. Right about a nice, medium wood stain. Quite clear. Soft cream-colored head. Pretty good retention. Moderate lacing. The aroma has a mix of gentle hops, rich malt and a solid mineral character. The hops have a nice dose of orange with floral and herbal notes. Solid caramel maltiness. The taste has nice hop flavor on top of that rich caramel malt. Pleasant bitterness in the finish. Fairly sweet but the beer pulls it off. Mostly gentle feel, though it doesn’t seem like they really tried to make it seem like a cask. Easy to drink. Pleasant stuff.

Aroma is hops, grains, some fruit. Darkish yellow color, no head. Clean taste, notes of lemongrass, grapefruit. A nice refreshing beer with some kick.

(Bottle): Pours a bright clear amber with a quickly diminishing white head. Aroma of some zest and hops with a background of maltiness. Flavour has lots of floral, hops, zest and sweetness but balanced with some biscuit and bread notes. Has a bit of bitterness on the finish. Very nice indeed.

Bottle at home in London, aged between one and two years. Probably picked up at Waitrose or something. Pours clear gold with a moderate, frothy white head. Ripe and lightly dry citrus in the nose, orange, suggestions of age to the malts, some bread. Light to medium sweet flavor, simple dry and bready malts, subtle dry caramel, hints of berries and orange. Light to medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Simple, lightly dry finish, mellow toasty sugars, some mild leafy bitterness, light orange peel. Actually not many signs of age here. The beer isn’t especially complex, but it’s nice to drink.

Bottle. Pours a dark amber gold with a high wheaten-colored head. Nose is mild and mostly floral. Hops bitterness up front with very light carbonation; orange toffee on the close, rather a sweetroll note. All right.

Bottle. Head is initially small, frothy, white, mostly diminishing. Body is dark yellow to light amber. Aroma is lightly malty (toasted grain), moderately hoppy (lemon/lime, flowers). Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter, slightly husky. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic. Very simple "just the facts" sort of rendition. Good balance but a little grainy in the finish. Serviceable but uninspiring.

Picked up at Costcutter, Lambeth, London (500ml, £2.89):
Lively smelling with a nice hop character and a strong floral base to the beer with plenty of herbal notes coming through along with some elderflower and orange. The end is complimented with some nice, bitter notes and the beer has a good balance.
Bright, orange amber colour with a thumb sized, foamy white head that eventually settles to a thick looking lacing on top.
Lighter hops than there was in the aroma but with a stronger floral taste. There is some elderflower and orange plus a some good herbal flavours. This is all backed up with a nice malt base and medium strength bitterness coupled with some summer fruits and a touch of sweetness.
Light medium body and moderate carbonation on top of a hop filled, bitter mouthfeel that has touches of sweetness too.

Easy to drink and went down well. It was surprisingly refreshing for the style and the bitterness levels. A nice beer and one that I’d be inclined to try again.

viktorvee (109) - Greater London, ENGLAND - APR 16, 2013
UPDATED: APR 22, 2013 Not hugely aromatic but a lovely taste. This beer goes very well with food, cheese and crackers. A mid gold and unremarkable white head. Taste of biscuit, bitter-sweet and a trace of hoppy tropical fruit, quite creamy in the mouth. Well balances, not overly bitter. Nice for the summer weather.
