Cask: Regular (but not permanent). Also available bottle conditioned (at 5.3%). Bengal Lancer is a traditional India Pale Ale, pale amber in colour, distinctively hoppy and highly refreshing. Itís notable for floral and spicy notes from the hops, and a finish of mild bitterness. A version of Bengal Lancer is brewed specifically for the export market, known simply as Fullerís India Pale Ale.

Aroma of sweet maltiness, very little hop. Pours from the bottle a pleasant amber-orange colour with a nice head that stays the course. Taste is sweet and malty with not enough hop. Dry finish, good carbonation and good mouthfeel. Overall a pale ale, not really an IPA. Typical for Fullerís, it is well-crafted but for too broad an appeal. Fullerís: be more daring and try some flavour!

Bottle from Sainsburys Team Valley. Pours deep orange colour. More bitter and less hoppy and fruity than my favourite IPAs, but an enjoyable tipple nonetheless.

For some odd reason, there are American breweries that make IPAs in the English style. Perhaps that due to the fact so few authentic English IPAs are actually available here, so itís always nice to give one a try when I can find it. Fullerís Bengal Lancer is probably an IPA in name only, even for an English-style entry. This is much closer to an amber ale as itís remarkably sweet and the hops are quite tame. One of the few malt-forward IPAs Iíve had.

I poured a 500ml bottle into a tulip glass. It had a best before date of 11/19/14 and cost $4.99 ($0.30 per ounce).

Appearance: Golden/amber/orange color. Body is fairly clear with a bit of haze, but carbonation is visible. Pours to a small, off-white, foamy head which retains and laces fairly well.

Smell: Sweet scent of orange sherbet and caramel candy.

Taste: This is one of the sweetest non-imperial IPAs Iíve ever had. Right away thereís a sweet malty taste of honey, caramel and butterscotch. Some orange fruit as well, but this doesnít seem to be a hop flavor. In fact, the hops are not very pronounced here at all. Some mild bitterness through the middle imparting just a touch of dryness. Thereís additional confectionery-like sweetness and flavor on the finish with a touch of butter and astringency. Perhaps this is an old bottle and the hops faded (which wouldnít surprise me), but I donít think Iíd consider this an IPA even if it were fresh. Bengal Lancer works well as an amber ale Ė too bad itís not marketed as such.

Drinkability: Another overtly English character to this beer is its relatively light body. At only 5.3% ABV, Bengal Lancer is closer in size to a pale ale than an IPA. On the plus side, itís easily quaffable. The mouthfeel is thin and crisp and leaves little aftertaste. I might even consider it refreshing at times. It could use more body and more flavor to truly be considered an IPA.

growler from Craft Beer Factory Marietta. Probably should have poured earlier then I did but I like this. Not so much an IPA but more ESB. Caramel malty goodness in an IPA. I detected not a lot of hops that normally identify a IPA. I had a Terrapin high 5 before this and it seems not IPAish at all. Iíd by again.

Draft taster - nose s floral and grassy. Sip adds caramel and stronger grass notes. Refreshing and lacking the bite of Nordic and American IPAs. Light to medium body.

Bottled. Clear amber with a very small off-white head that soon disappeared. Mainly malt on the nose, with a hint of citrus. Quite sweet, malt and some citrus again, then a dry, nicely bitter finish. Clean flavours, with a touch of warmth from the alcohol and a nice astringency. Good.

Bottle. Thin light tan head, fades fast. Clear copper colour, slight carbonation. Medium-weak aroma of caramel, hops. Sweet floral taste, fades quick leaving a bitter dry aftertaste.

Bottle - amber with a frothy beige head which quite quickly fades to a ring. Weak lacing. Aroma is floral and grassy with coriander seeds. Some hints of blackcurrant and alcohol. Taste of grass and flowers with maltiness and earth coming through shortly after. A little bit of orange and lemon and a light bitterness to end.
