The fourth incarnation of Brewer’s Reserve spent a year in the Fuller’s cellar in rare Comte de Lauvia Armagnac casks from the Bas region of France. The beer is infused with brandy characteristics, with distinctive notes of vanilla, green apple and cinnamon, a solid malt base and velvety alcohol warmth.

Just put an average ale in a Armagnac cask and this is what you get. Very poor and heartless ’special’ beer. Typical commercial.

This ale is very well balanced even though it is 8.5% and oak-barrel aged. Smoke and vanilla are very well balanced.

0.5 l bottle from Alko. Amber color. Tart fruity aroma with raisins, brandy, almonds. Sweetish, nutty and raisiny flavor with almonds, vanilla, oak and long brandy finish. Long complex taste, nice sipper.

500ml bottle with a fellow Siebel student, thanks Tim! Bottle #24995. Pours a clear, orange-gold colored body with a finger-width, creamy, beige head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is pretty fruity with a nice caramel note, some wood, a pleasant brandy, and touches of vanilla. Flavor is similar. Fruity throughout with a moderately sweet caramel and toffee as well as a nice wood, brandy, and vanilla. Finishes dry, woody, and fruity with a nice sweetness and a light alcohol warmth. Lengthy aftertaste following a medium, smooth body and a very soft, creamy, moderate carbonation. Overall, a pretty cool beer. A lot fruitier than I anticipated, but well balanced and very enjoyable. Good one.

UPDATED: MAR 12, 2014 Gekruiden geur. Kruiden drankje. Frisdrank. Waterig. Helaas kan ik niet meer noteren als deze rating. Dit komt doordat ik dit biertje te slecht vond om er meer over te kunnen noteren.

This is big cognac and wood. Big soapy white head on light brown. Boozy. Decent drinkability and smooth, but hard to share as people wanted hops. Think it will be mellower in a few short years.

bottle # 30102 - pours a lightly hazed copper-red ale in the glass with a tight 2 finger cap which reduces to a surface lace. Pungent aroma is a glorious concoction of brandy grape skins, smoked oak and dark fruitiness from the ale and a sweet caramel malt tone. Medium bodied slick mouth feel. Flavour is simply a blast of brandied fruit riding on a sweet malt fomite - light undeveloped complexity in the mid palate will probably improve with some time in the cellar - finish is long and rich with the brandy/oak tones giving way to a more earthy malty fruitness of the ale. This is a powerful ale in nose and palate with substantial fusel strength - very good to sip with a cigar or dessert, but a few more months in the cellar will bring everything together well.
