Commercial Description:
Bottle & keg (USA); Pasteurised.
First brewed in 1971. Ingredients: Pale Ale malt, Crystal malt and Maize; Target, Challenger, Northdown and Goldings hops.
Brewed at 5.5% ABV in cask and 5.9% ABV in bottle, ESB is a true liquid legend, and should be savoured as such.
ESB has a wonderful rich mahogany appearance. Taking in the nose, the beer is bursting with cherry and orange, balanced by soft malty toffee and caramel notes. The flavour delivers everything you would expect from such a full-bodied ale. The unique blend of Northdown, Target, Challenger and Goldings hops imparts grassy, peppery notes on the tongue along with intense citrus fruit characters of grapefruits, oranges and lemons. The blend of Pale Ale and Crystal malts in the brew give a biscuity, toffee element to the beer. A smooth, mellow bitterness lingers on the palate to give a superbly satisfying finish.

Wonderful ruby red color. Aroma of candied honey. Tastes like roasted seasame and rich malted honey. It was not as balanced as I thought it should be. Very good but not my fave.

11.2 ounce bottle from Whole Foods Charlottesville, best by 9 May 09. Reddish pour with a one-finger head. Very malty aroma with brown sugar and dark fruit notes with just a touch of bitterness. Caramel, brown sugar and raisin notes in the taste with a finish of citrus hops. Medium bodied.

On tap at Fullers Brewery, Chiswick 2004: Amver color, fruity nose, soft carbonation. Kind of a bloomy taste. Cereal taste. This is one of the beers that get"s the dry hops added at the end that comes through as it is more bitter than the IPA (where this is not the end procedure).

Excellent beer. You notice the bitterness first, but after a few sips the chewy maltiness starts becoming more and more prevelent. I actually understand what chewy malt means because of this beer. Since it’s supposedly better on cask over in England, I’m definitely going to have and try it over there one day. It was good enough in a bottle.

Strong Dactyl taste (Buttery) Good Malt aroma mild finish seemed to be weak on the hops. Not one of the better ESB’s out there. But drinkable! Could have been an old bottle. Will re-try later.

500 ML bottle. Golden amber with foamy white head. Good hoppy aroma. Sweet malty taste with a decent hoppy finish.
