COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle & keg (USA); Pasteurised.
First brewed in 1971. Ingredients: Pale Ale malt, Crystal malt and Maize; Target, Challenger, Northdown and Goldings hops.
Brewed at 5.5% ABV in cask and 5.9% ABV in bottle, ESB is a true liquid legend, and should be savoured as such.
ESB has a wonderful rich mahogany appearance. Taking in the nose, the beer is bursting with cherry and orange, balanced by soft malty toffee and caramel notes. The flavour delivers everything you would expect from such a full-bodied ale. The unique blend of Northdown, Target, Challenger and Goldings hops imparts grassy, peppery notes on the tongue along with intense citrus fruit characters of grapefruits, oranges and lemons. The blend of Pale Ale and Crystal malts in the brew give a biscuity, toffee element to the beer. A smooth, mellow bitterness lingers on the palate to give a superbly satisfying finish.

Bottle from Systembolaget. Pours dark amber with a bubbly white foamhead that settles to a nice attractive layer throughout the session. With it’s foam layer and that reddish brown color it is certainly an attractive beer. Equally attractive is the aroma, sweet from candied fruit and flowery from some exotic plant. It is one of the most delicious nose of any beer. The taste is carrying on feeling created by the start, but here hops are playing an important part as the bitterness is playing hide and seek with the sweetness from crystal malts. Very balanced, almost a tad too much bitterness, but it’s the kind that makes you think about when you can have another swig. It’s simply delicious too. Medium to full in the mouth with classic english lower carbonation. I still prefer the London Pride, but the ESB is a classy great beer from a classy great brewery. I like.

From 0.33l bottle. Pours nice clear amber to red liquid, small tan creamy head. Aroma: malt, toffee, citrus, grapefruit, pine, very nice, Taste: medium sweet, medium bitter, light sour, some minor metallic off taste, nice malty toffee body, with hoppy accents, citruses, lemon grass, pine, Palate: medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation, long bitter caramel aftertaste. Overall: very good, extremely drinkable, in the aroma reminds (partially) Anchor Liberty Ale - the citrus - pine texture, but the ESB character is unique, mainly in it´s taste- malty, toffee.

Almost legendary example of its style, comprising the stronger, fuller, more ambitious bitters. Off-white head, beautiful deep amber colour, complex aroma of nutty and honeyish malts, pear, grapefruit, banana; taste a full nutty maltiness, refined and elegant, bit honeyish, a tad yeasty, evolving into a complex fruitiness with fruit accents popping up here and there, ending in a more grapefruit-like, very dry, peppery hop bitterness. Wonderful English bitter even from the bottle.

Transfer from BA review on 11-12-12- Served on tap in a 10 oz chalice glass Appearance – The beer is served a deep-deep brown nearly black color. When served there was a big brown head on the brew that faded over a moderate amount of time to give a light level of lacing. Smell – The aroma is of a sweet coffee smell mixed with a good dose of milk chocolate. Behind these aromas is a roasted malt and light vanilla smell. Taste- The taste begins with a roasted malt and coffee flavor. Upfront it also has some sweet chocolate flavors as well. These sweeter flavors dwindle as the taste advances with the chocolate becoming more bitter and the flavors of coffee/espresso getting stronger. While near the end a quite sweet lactose taste comes to the tongue making the beer on the sweeter side and balancing out the bitter with more sweetness. In the end the flavors when mixed together leave a mocha cappuccino flavor on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the creamier side with a carbonation level that is rather average. The creamier body is very nice for the flavors of the beer and really accentuates the dark chocolate, coffee and roasted flavors. Overall – A pretty tasty stout. With it not being too heavy, it having a creamier feel and nice sweeter finish it is quite pleasant to drink and a nice beer to sip after a meal.

Very smooth and well balanced. Slightly alcoholic bitterness near the finish docks points, but all in all this one is a winner.

Filtered, so clear amber. Offwhite/beige head. Cara and fruity aroma, hint of citrus. Not intence in anyway, just easy and a delight. Medium body, medium bitter. Easy due to ABV.

Flaska från SB. Mörkt kopparfärgad vätska med skum som skimmrar i gyllene. Doft av karamell och lite citrus. Sötman vägs upp bra av en blommig beska.

From a 4 pack. Pours a dark pinkish orange with a beige head. Medium lacing. This is a classic bitter ale that sets the standard for bitters. Smells of hops, malt, citrus, and cherries. A delight. Tastes of hops and malted barley and fresh sourdough. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
