COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle & keg (USA); Pasteurised.
First brewed in 1971. Ingredients: Pale Ale malt, Crystal malt and Maize; Target, Challenger, Northdown and Goldings hops.
Brewed at 5.5% ABV in cask and 5.9% ABV in bottle, ESB is a true liquid legend, and should be savoured as such.
ESB has a wonderful rich mahogany appearance. Taking in the nose, the beer is bursting with cherry and orange, balanced by soft malty toffee and caramel notes. The flavour delivers everything you would expect from such a full-bodied ale. The unique blend of Northdown, Target, Challenger and Goldings hops imparts grassy, peppery notes on the tongue along with intense citrus fruit characters of grapefruits, oranges and lemons. The blend of Pale Ale and Crystal malts in the brew give a biscuity, toffee element to the beer. A smooth, mellow bitterness lingers on the palate to give a superbly satisfying finish.

UPDATED: MAR 12, 2013 A very nice beer. Small white brownish head. Roasted aroma and enough carbonation. On palate, fruits and a lot of caramel. It´s a bitter beer, but bitterness feels more roasted and caramelized, which I love.

I do not wax on poetically about beer but I do know the quality of a beer once tasted. This review is not about my tastes but reinforces the numbers, which are arbitrary.

bottle @ home. Pours amber with a small off-white head. Spicy, rather sweet aroma with intense, warming caramel and toffee aroma. Also flowers, biscuits, syrup, some red berries. Great balance. Taste is dry and medium sweet with biscuits, caramel, toffee, flowers, nuts, herbs, earth, red berries and marmalade. Spicy finish with a balanced, assertive bitterness. A classic.

Gylden mot ravfarvet med høyt beige skum. Lukter honning, lett brent karamell og noe epler og røde bær. Middels fylde. Søtlig smak, kandis og karamell. Lett kort bitterhet.

500ml Bottle from Tesco, Dragonville, Durham. Pours a good-looking, ruby/amber with a bubbly, foamy, white head and soft carbonation. The aroma has caramel and toffee malts as well as ripe apples and berries. The taste is a balance of nutty and warming, biscuity malts and old-fashioned English hop flavours lending a reasonable bitterness to the finish. I expected a little more from a beer with such a great reputation - I found his to be a little bland, and flat, obviously pasteurised, although perfectly drinkable with some pleasant flavours.

Appearance: amber copper clear color. minimal white head. Aroma: Caramel, toffe, dried fruit, apricot, raisin. Taste: low to medium bitterness. Palate: light to medium body. thin texture. soft carbonation. abrupt finish. Overall: not a complex or interesting beer, but does a good job as a pub beer.

Copper colored, foam crown that disappears quickly. Aromas of toffee, dried fruits (raisins and apricots), some roasted notes. The body of the beer feels light with a slight bitterness at the end. Drank it to chicken leg made in the oven, seasoned with chipotel, cinnamon and curry. The flavors and bitterness of the beer were raised slightly, in combination with the food.
