COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask: Regular.
First brewed in 1969 as Winter Bitter - renamed Extra Special Bitter in 1971.
Ingredients: Pale Ale and Crystal malts; Target, Challenger, Northdown and Goldings hops. Dry hopped in the brewery.
CAMRA Supreme Champion 1978, 1981 and 1985.
Brewed at 5.5% ABV in cask and 5.9% ABV in bottle, ESB is a true liquid legend, and should be savoured as such.
ESB has a wonderful rich mahogany appearance. Taking in the nose, the beer is bursting with cherry and orange, balanced by soft malty toffee and caramel notes. The flavour delivers everything you would expect from such a full-bodied ale. The unique blend of Northdown, Target, Challenger and Goldings hops imparts grassy, peppery notes on the tongue along with intense citrus fruit characters of grapefruits, oranges and lemons. The blend of Pale Ale and Crystal malts in the brew give a biscuity, toffee element to the beer. A smooth, mellow bitterness lingers on the palate to give a superbly satisfying finish.

NOTE: Most Fuller’s beer in the US is served by handpump kegs and not a cask. Ask your server.

Sweet aroma. Amber color with no head. Very drinkable beer. Bitter taste is smooth but has character. Great summer beer. Although I stole this from the description, the orange marmalade comparison is spot on.

Cask@St Urhos Pub, Helsinki. Poured amber colour with a white head. Aroma is nutty and fruity, flavor alike, hops and toffee, ends quite bitter. Nice!

Cask at Barrow Boy and Banker near London Bridge. Medium to dark amber. Fruity malt aroma, a bit sweet. Good caramel flavor as well. Fruity flavor, great malt, strong hops but not bitter. Great balance. Round, mellow, excellent.

Pours reddish brown with a foamy white head. Faintly floral, slightly bitter aroma. Almost a chocolate syrupy taste at first, then ends with a floral, bitter note.

Handpump, Urho´s pub Helsinki. Orange color with small white head; aroma of fruity hops and sweet maltiness; medium body, low carbonation; caramel malty taste with fruity hop notes, low bitterness. Strangely this feels a bit like the bottle-version gone flat.

Cask. At The Fullers Brewery. Dark amber colour with an off-white head. Malt, nuts, toffee, oranges, honey, lightly sweet, peppery hops, maybe some alcohol. Medium bitter. Smooth and balanced. A classic beer. Very nice to finally try it on cask.

Cask The benchmark for the style as far as i’m concerned. Deep amber body, leafy, spicy hops, rich crystal malts, complex fruit undertones and strong bitterness in great balance.
