Bright, reddish gold, looks rich and enticing; delicate orange perfume; malty, some toasty notes, orange marmalade, juicy stewed fruit, a tinge of alcohol; understated bitter hops in the finish; my only quibble is that I’ve never particularly liked the (in my experience) unique aftertaste - which I can only describe as akin to the aftermath of a beery burp (not that I would ever stoop to emitting such a thing); complex and satisfying overall.

Handpump. Brownish amber pour. Frothy tan head. Aroma is nutty, surprisingly boozy, lemon, pepper and toffee. Boozy again on the palate and not nearly as pleasant as the aroma. They sure this stuff is 5.5? Opens with biscuit maltiness and grass. Bitter lingering black tea finish. All in all kind of bland, way too much booze prevalent and not a good balance at all.

Funka alltid, en fröjd för gommen när jag hittar Fullers ESB på fat. Balanserad, maltig, fruktig.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Linnet (539) - Umeå, SWEDEN - APR 7, 2012
toffee, nutty, very English, it has distinct notes of fruits as well. the malt backbone is very present and it is ending in a warming note. the colour is deep amber and a medium off-white head leaves lacing. the taste is rich, nutty, bread, fruits, faint notes of marmalade and full of earthy English hops. It ends in awarming note. smooth mouthfeel. This is a very good example of English brewing at it’s best.

Had this in a Glasgow Wetherspoons. A nice-looking pint with a decent head. Wasn’t sure about the aroma and it was a bit sweet for my taste but it was a good pint.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 OleR (3660) - Oslo, NORWAY - JAN 18, 2012
Full pint from cask @Barrow Boy and Banker, Southwark, London. Deep amber brown. Virtually no head. Fine rounded aroma of juicy dark fruits and lightly toasted malts. Taste is fully balanced. A smooth and rounded malt character, a fine fruitness, and a gentle underlying bitterness. Very soft on the palate, quite mellow actually. Soft malt-accented finish. This is very good, but I think a fresh bottle version is even better.
