COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask: Regular.
First brewed in 1969 as Winter Bitter - renamed Extra Special Bitter in 1971.
Ingredients: Pale Ale and Crystal malts; Target, Challenger, Northdown and Goldings hops. Dry hopped in the brewery.
CAMRA Supreme Champion 1978, 1981 and 1985.
Brewed at 5.5% ABV in cask and 5.9% ABV in bottle, ESB is a true liquid legend, and should be savoured as such.
ESB has a wonderful rich mahogany appearance. Taking in the nose, the beer is bursting with cherry and orange, balanced by soft malty toffee and caramel notes. The flavour delivers everything you would expect from such a full-bodied ale. The unique blend of Northdown, Target, Challenger and Goldings hops imparts grassy, peppery notes on the tongue along with intense citrus fruit characters of grapefruits, oranges and lemons. The blend of Pale Ale and Crystal malts in the brew give a biscuity, toffee element to the beer. A smooth, mellow bitterness lingers on the palate to give a superbly satisfying finish.

NOTE: Most Fuller’s beer in the US is served by handpump kegs and not a cask. Ask your server.

Cask at The Blackbird on Earl’s Court Road. Pours dark copper with an off-white head. Floral/citrus aroma. Med minus body. Flavor is moderate roast malt with sweet pitted fruit, floral and a hint of citrus. Very smooth Finishes towards bitter - barring the fruit. Really nice.

Copper coloured, but looks flat with no head on it. It’s full bodied and you can feel the strength a little, but mostly sweet in aroma and taste.

Real ale at pikilinna, tampere. Clear amber red color, small white head. Quite light aroma of malts and hops. Extra smooth mouthfeel, aftertaste of malty body with hops, no co2. Decent.

Cask handpump at Fuller’s Mad Bishop & Bear pub at Paddington Station, London. Deep brown colour, very rich. Spiced, toffee aroma. Quite thick, if just a little oily. Full bodied. Very nice pint. Worth the train being delayed!

Pours clear amber with a thin head that leaves a bit of lacing. Aroma is spicy and has some hops and a hint of berrylike sweetness. Mouthfeel is smooth obviously, full and has a hint of carbonation. Taste is malty and consistent with aroma, though the sweetness is more like raisins. Malty and bitter aftertaste. Nice!

The first ESB is still broadly the best. Fullers makes an amazing ESB in both the cask and bottled categories.

Cask pull at the Red Lion, Uxbridge. Who knows how many times I’ve had this beer? A lot. It’s about as solid a version of the style as they come, with Fullers so reliable in this regard. Nice amber pour with a healthy froth. Soft malts and light fruit in the nose, along with the promise of fragrant, spicy hops. Well balanced in the flavor as you might think, with a bit more fruit and biscuit.
