COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask: Regular.
First brewed in 1969 as Winter Bitter - renamed Extra Special Bitter in 1971.
Ingredients: Pale Ale and Crystal malts; Target, Challenger, Northdown and Goldings hops. Dry hopped in the brewery.
CAMRA Supreme Champion 1978, 1981 and 1985.
Brewed at 5.5% ABV in cask and 5.9% ABV in bottle, ESB is a true liquid legend, and should be savoured as such.
ESB has a wonderful rich mahogany appearance. Taking in the nose, the beer is bursting with cherry and orange, balanced by soft malty toffee and caramel notes. The flavour delivers everything you would expect from such a full-bodied ale. The unique blend of Northdown, Target, Challenger and Goldings hops imparts grassy, peppery notes on the tongue along with intense citrus fruit characters of grapefruits, oranges and lemons. The blend of Pale Ale and Crystal malts in the brew give a biscuity, toffee element to the beer. A smooth, mellow bitterness lingers on the palate to give a superbly satisfying finish.

NOTE: Most Fuller’s beer in the US is served by handpump kegs and not a cask. Ask your server.

Cask. Rich yellow-orange with beige creamy head, no discernible aroma, hoppy metallic taste, low carbonation, sweetish abrupt finish, metallic aftertaste. Something must be wrong with the cask, the metallic taste is not easy to explain,

Cask at Llywelyn’s St. Charles. It poured a clear copper color with a small white head. The aroma was of sweet caramel, some flowers and a light hoppiness. The taste was sweet, malty, some caramel/toffee, flowery with a hoppy bitter finish. Nice.

Cask @Fuller´s TapRoom,Griffin Brewery. November 2013.
In short: a "mild bitter", if this makes any sense.
Pours hazy golden with little white head. Short head retention, some lacing. Malty, some butterscotch and grassy aromas. Medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Taste is malty, little hop punch, herbal one, some diacetils. Very well balanced. Smooth and enjoyable.

Tap@ pub in London. Cask of keg weet ik niet. Donkergeel/amber kleur. Ruikt moutig en een beetje naar snoep. Redelijk zoete caramel en snoep smaak. Beetje hopbitterheid in de afdronk. Best lekker.

Cask at the Salutation Hammersmith. Clear dark orange / light brown, still, white bubbles on top. Smell - not a lot to report - maybe some light toffee. Body is medium, carbonation very low. Taste - toffee, slight liquorice, a bit watery, lightly bitter finish. The flavour is actually quite nice but there isn’t much of it.

Caramel smell with a bitter taste that lingers turning sour. Taste is uncomplex with uncomplimentary malt & hops. Would have expected more from what is supposed to be a classic. Not bad but not great either. Rated by BrewTom
