COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask: Regular.
First brewed in 1969 as Winter Bitter - renamed Extra Special Bitter in 1971.
Ingredients: Pale Ale and Crystal malts; Target, Challenger, Northdown and Goldings hops. Dry hopped in the brewery.
CAMRA Supreme Champion 1978, 1981 and 1985.
Brewed at 5.5% ABV in cask and 5.9% ABV in bottle, ESB is a true liquid legend, and should be savoured as such.
ESB has a wonderful rich mahogany appearance. Taking in the nose, the beer is bursting with cherry and orange, balanced by soft malty toffee and caramel notes. The flavour delivers everything you would expect from such a full-bodied ale. The unique blend of Northdown, Target, Challenger and Goldings hops imparts grassy, peppery notes on the tongue along with intense citrus fruit characters of grapefruits, oranges and lemons. The blend of Pale Ale and Crystal malts in the brew give a biscuity, toffee element to the beer. A smooth, mellow bitterness lingers on the palate to give a superbly satisfying finish.

NOTE: Most Fuller’s beer in the US is served by handpump kegs and not a cask. Ask your server.

On tap in Beergeek bar. Copper colour with very stable white head. Hoppy aroma. Taste is a mix of sweet caramel and floral hops. I will try it again to re-rete if it is so legendary...

From tap. Dark amber with virtually no head. Aroma is an inviting mix of dark bread and caramel with notes of spices and dried fruit. Taste is full, rich and spicy. Notes of dark toast and spicy fruit. Slight bitterness in the finish and low on CO2, as it should. Great beer!

Cask, on this occasion in the Holly Bush NW3 on Lakshmi’s birthday. When well kept (recurring Fullers theme?) this stuff is awesome. Deep reddish leather colour, thin head. Great balance. Powerful malt with some boozy sweetness, but no burn. tangy hops, marmelade, floral notes, modest bitterness. Syrupy texture. I really like it. The problem is I most often see it when on something of a longer session and its really dangerous if you have too many! On this visit I was able to sink a couple and head home to bed, glorious!

Cask in London. Clear copper-brown appearance with medium white head. Nose offers caramel, oranges, cherries and redcurrents. Taste is robust fruity caramel malts with an assertive hop bitterness that satisfies. Medium body with oily texture. One to sip and savour. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
