Halt liter bottle pour courtesy of Paul Unwin, thanks Paul!! It pours out clear brilliant deep copper with ruby hues and tan head. The aroma is rich yummy sweet malts, earthy hops, some pine hops and more earthy goodness at the end of the draw. The taste is right up my alley with a smooth modest level of pine hops mixing with sticky firm malt sweetened earthiness and some floral hops thinly ringed around the edges. This is goooood stuff.

Fine appearance, amber and a big lacing head. Lots of sweetness in the aroma, and in the start of the flavor. The flavor finish with a bitterness. Overall a beer that really has aroma and flavor to the full.

Bottle (500ml). From Waitrose. Lovely clear copper pour, large lasting fizzy-frothy beige head. Pretty big aroma here, alcohol, rye malt, pungent nut oil and full-on yeast and hops - I donít know which ones, but theyíre lush and I likeím. The taste follows, the booziness isnít overpowering, but itís up front and doesnít fade as do the hops after a bit - youíre left with that pungent, oily grain on your tongue for quite a while. Make it a bit less boozy and itís a world-beater ... as it is, itís a cool-weather sipper; contemplative, would be the BeerBistro classification.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Small shiny white creamy head; brown body. Sweetish caramelly oily aroma with notes of burnt almonds. Sweet powerful licorice and caramel taste with alcohol notes. Dry oily caramel finish. A good bit of alcohol heat. Burnt almond taste lingers. Nice, but very unusual for an English beer. Something earthy and slightly cloying in the taste detracts a bit. (0.33l bottle.)

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle. Pours a beautiful deep rusty orange with a thick densely packed vanilla coloured head that leaves early delicate lace. Rich caramel aroma, slightly earthy, with hints of spicy fruit. Very malty palate, toast and toffee with quince and cherry fruit. Woody and spicy notes, mild bitterness. Full-bodied, chewy, with a pleasantly warming finish. Like a baby barley wine! Delicious!

(Bottle, Monks Cafe, Stockholm, 15 Sep 2008) Dark amber colour with frothy, beige head. Malty, fruity nose with caramel, orange peel, mandarin and fresh citrussy hops. Slightly vinous. Malty, fruity taste with notes of dried fruit, orange marmalade, caramel, candy sugar and citrussy hops in the finish. Slightly vinous and rather sweet. Full body with chewy mouthfeel. Definitely a BIG beer with full, rounded mouthfeel, lots of malt and rather sweet, but with hops to back it up. Well balanced and really nice.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
This was sampled alongside the 2006 and 2007 vintage ales and the effects of pasteurisation were all too apparent. Deep copper coloured with a slight, off-white head. Very sweet aroma of barley sugar and toffee with a hint of grassy hop. The flavour was of boiled sweets with some redeeming hops and a short bitter finish. Ok, but lacking the complexity of the vintage ales.
