COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Pasteurised bottle. Also available in keg for export only. The very occasional cask version is only available in the UK and has a separate listing.
Goldings hops and Golden Promise malt.
At 8.5% ABV, Golden Pride guarantees a superb range of flavours, that is sure to satisfy even the most discerning of palates. Our brewers describe Golden Pride thus: ’ deep amber in appearance, Golden Pride is full bodied, of moderate bitterness, moderately hopped and rich in malt. Full flavoured, and reminiscent of sweet orange oil, toasted grains, and bread. Rich malty aromas lead to a similarly styled palate, with an intense finish. Sweet and bitter flavours are expressed in good balance in this weighty brew.’ Or as the late Michael Jackson, beer writer and connoisseur, put it: ’the Cognac of beers’.

Bottle from the LCBO. Drink by date in July, drinking it in September - oops! Nice clear reddish-golden with a strong white head. Aroma is big and quite sweet - lots of toffee and lightly stewed peaches, some sweet orange peel and a bit of lightly toasted sugar. Body is full but not cloying. Flavour starts as sweet as the aroma suggests, with toffee/caramel and peach candy prominent, along with a bit of corn syrup and raisin bread, and even a hint of baked spiced apple. It dries out a bit toward the finish, which is moderately bitter, but I suspect the hops would’ve been a bit bigger and provided more balance when it was fresher. But even with some age on it, it’s a really pleasant beer that nicely straddles the line between strong ale and barley wine.

Bottle @ home. Poured dark amber/caramel colour with an off-white head. Strong malty caramel overtones in the flavour. Not overly hoppy. Underlying hint of brandy in the taste. Possibly the alcohol was a little too obvious - nonetheless a satisfying experience

Surprisingly good beer. Wasn’t expecting it to be so good as it is mass produced but it was. Strongly bitter but well balanced, complex flavor and pleasant alcohol flavor. Good beer.

I quite like this ale, it is decidedly strong in alcohol, but actually doesn’t taste to full of alcohol, a definite grown up persons bitter, with a definite bitter aftertaste, so more for the serious bitter lover I feel, it reminds me of the smell of proper old boozers in the north, heavy malty hop smell and flavour, I like!
