Classic mild ale making a welcome return to the bar nearly 10 years after it was last sold in the UK. The beer is rich, dark and packed with subtle sweet, caramel and nutty flavours.

Cask, The Gateway, Leicester. Dark brown with a dense beige head. Aromas are light roast malts with some chocolate and dry hops. Flavours are light roast, earthy malts with some oatiness and chocolate smoothness. Quite hoppy on the finish. Light bodied as expected of a mild but not enough depth of flavour to make it great.

First tasted this in Coanes, Johnstone in May 1994. Cask, handpump dispense. Clear dark ruby red in colour with a thin creamy tan head. Dusty scraped burnt toast in the short aroma. Thin but creamy mouthfeel and good lacing. Darl malts deliver a sweet maltloaf base with juicy raisins, cherries and soft caramel. Slight prickle of dusty hop resins give a very short bitter aftertaste, along with roast grain notes. Finish has a mellow roast coffee flavour in at the end. An excellent mild and well recommended.

Cask handpull at the Old Joint Stock, Birmingham. It’s an alright mild. Some roast on the end and some softness in the mouth.

Cask@Akkurat, Stockholm. Very deep ambery colour with small beigeish brown head. Aroma is mildly roasted malts, some slight wooden and fruity notes. Flavour is quite similar and actually being very bitter at the same time. Nice pleasant and easy to drink brew with big bitterness in the finish.

DruncanVeasey (5150) - NUNEATON, Blue Square Prem, Warwickshire, ENGLAND - JUL 15, 2010
Pre-The Coral pint at The Old Joint Stock, Brum. Burgundy, ruby tints, tan collar. Coffee and smoky malt aroma. Old running shoe filled with crumbled butter biscuit and coal dust; earthy yeast, slight dampness, black cherry. Tastes like it’s been in wood. Engaging, want-some-more mild with suggestions of depth. Really good.

Cask (Kitty’s, Helsinki)
Deep red, healthy spongy head. Lightly roasted sweet malty aroma, a touch caramelly. Simple gentle roasty taste, a touch more burnt than caramelly. Simple refreshing, but almost watery, palate. Finish a little drying, but short of ashy. A simple mild, but a good lunchtime refresher.

Impressive low ABV style. Bit parts chocolate, fruit and fruit cake. This would be a monster of a beer in an ’imperial’ version. Maybe the best mid strength I have ever had.

Cask Handpump at the Derby Tup, Chesterfield 22/05/2010 Fruit aroma. Dark coloured smooth on the palate and fruity with a slightly dry lasting malt finish.

This one’s been around since the year dot. Dark with strong caramel flavours and almost like a ’Boys’ London Porter’. Shame it’s not brewed regularly as I rate it as one of the best dark milds.

Cask at Akkurat, Stockholm. Dark mahogany colour. Mild bready raisiny malt aroma. Mid sweet with light but firm body and clean mouthfeel. Slight salty hop bitterness cuts through the thin layer of caramel and chocolate. Coffee-like finish. Good enough well drinkable mild, but a bit clean.

Cask @ Bon Accord. Nasty fag ash aroma, very dark brown colour. Tastes like cold ovaltine. Not for me.
