3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Clear amber-red with orangey hue; very little head, immediately gone. Fruity nose (only indication of the blackberries), colourmalt, and... diacetyl. Right. Taste: hopbitter sits uneasy upon the diacetyl. Why, why, why? Reasonably full-bodied, helped by the butterscotch. I might be derided for this over and over again, but whether British, European , American or whatever, I hate diacetyl from the moment it hits identification level. Spoiled beer.

UPDATED: JUL 31, 2004 Bottled. Nice ale, not too dark but certainly sutible for winter. Loverly fruity flavour. Ill have to try this next winter cask-conditioned - tried to sample it in early february and they had already stopped it.

I was expting a darker winter beer. Oh, well. This is a smooth malty beer with blackberries you can taste! Makes for a fruity, juicy beer. Quite unusual and not at all bad.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottled. Copper colour, head initially good but mainly big bubbles that soon dissapear. Aromas reminiscent of cherry skin along with a good solid hop note. Blackcurrant flavours are apparent but subdued, blending well with caramel and hop flavours. Finish is delicate and dry with a late hoppy aftertaste.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
An easy drinking session beer. Sweet and sour malt tastes, a slight winter spice taste, some bitterness but no floral taste. A not-quite-as-outstanding version of Sam Smith’s winter welcome.

Malty and bitter ike expected but has a different kind of sweetness that doesnít apppeal to me that much. Good head, an obvious caramel flavor. Not a favourite, but all right.
