From a bottle in America. Nose has hints of chocolate and stronger notes of espresso. Pours a nice frothy head that laces the glass; near black body with hints of red in the light. Taste has some sweet chocolate cake notes, espresso, some bitter chocolate notes. Finishes with a lovely hops balance and bitterness to round out the chocolate. Mouthfeel is creamy. Overall very delicious. Good session beer.

0,5l can. Dark brown color. Nice big thick, creamy head, stays. Roasted malts, chocolate, caramel in aroma. Flavor is pretty much the same with buttery smoothness added. Very easy to drink. Good beer.

Bottle from Waitrose for the Mass Online Tasting. Pours a very dark brown colour with a rocky light tan head. A lovely aroma of roasty malt, chocolate and caramel. Similar roasty malt and chocolate flavours. Mild bitterness with moderate carbonation and a foamy mouth-feel. Very nice.

Almost a perfect. This is what I want from a porter. Nice black color, great aromas. Roasted malts on taste and an amazing aftertaste. Great beer.

Pours a dark brown, decent light tan head. Warm aroma of roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, and a hint of nuttiness. Smooth, with a mild bitter finish.

Malty and milky. I’m slightly dissapointed by this beer, its got body and a nice bitter aftertaste that is quite dry. Sounds great? I can see why its a highly rated beer but the initial mouth is so lactose tasting that it almost spoils the overall taste. Imagine this milk-milkshake-milk stout-Irish stout -ordinary bitter-smoke, this beer covers all those tastes and in that order in the first 10 seconds of every sip. Not for me but if you’re a fan of weaker stouts, lighlty carbonated porters or even if you like milk stouts then this may well be your dream come true.

500 ml bottle bought in Jumbo, Santiago de Chile. Pours a very dark and elegant brown-mahogany color with a fine tan espresso head. Absolutely perfect appearance. Aroma is malty with some roastiness. Initially I get notes of hay, dark chocolate, cocoa powder, lactose, almond nougat and mokka. Some hops can be barely noticeable but adding some complexity of dry leaves. Taste is strong, semi-bitter with very clear roastiness. Notes of bitter chocolate, fine tobacco, mokkacino and caramel. Some light smoke in the finish. Overwhelming. Full bodied beer but not too heavy. Finish is roasty and leaves a torrified aftertaste. The best Porter I’ve ever tasted by far and one of the best bottled English beers.

Bottle. Very dark pour with a smaller cream head. Big roasty coffee and chocolate aroma. Good full palate, especially for the style. Taste is also sharp roasty coffee with some chocolate, and a hint of black cherry. This is what a porter should be. Fantastic.

Brown 500ml bottle, best before April 2008, drank May 2007. Poured into a pint sleeve glass, it is dark, very dark mahogany, and a hint of red, with a fast shrinking coffee coloured head. I like the head to stay on my beers, this turned very quickly into no more than a wisp and collar around the glass. Aroma of rich coffee, dark chocolate, burnt caramel and some plum pudding. The taste is very similar to the smell, lots of chocolate, coffee and caramel flavours in there. Dry and a little watery for such a dark looking beer, strangely the chocolate, coffee and caramel tones do not stay for long in the mouth. It does however sweeten up as the flavours die. Too overpowering in the coffee stakes for me, the chocolate and caramel I can handle OK, but just a little too much decaff.

Quel plaisir gustatif.
