Commercial Description:
Bottled and (in USA) kegged - pasteurised.
Fuller’s London Porter captures the flavours of those original brews perfectly, although you won’t find a cloudy pint these days! Rich, dark and complex, at 5.4% ABV the beer has an outstanding depth of flavour.
It is brewed from a blend of Brown, Crystal and Chocolate malts for a creamy delivery balanced by traditional Fuggles hops. The range of flavours works well with a wide variety of foods, ranging from rich meat dishes, to oysters, and even chocolate puddings.

Bottle @ Bishops Arms, Karlstad. This is what I’ve been imagining a good porter to taste like - quite sweet with hints of chocolate, coffe, roasted malt and some sea salt (which I tend to find in many stout/porters). Well, it’s really good however. Fuller’s is a very good brewery, I must say.

500mL can purchased from LCBO in Toronto. Pours a dark brown with a bit of white head. Light malty aroma. First taste is nice, with a solid roasted malt and chocolate flavours. Nice roasty aftertaste. The canned version recently fared poorly at a blind porter and stout tasting at C’est What - but its competition was against mainly draught offerings.

Dry, almost ashy porter. Well-textured palate. Very old-school by-the-book example, with a decidedly british character.

Nearly black, with a moderate tan head. Enough body and complexity to keep me interested. Not bad, considering I’m an Imperial Stout fan.

A very nice porter. Tastes of bitter chocolate, coffee and ash. Finish is slightly bitter with a smoke aftertaste.

Can from the local LCBO. Comes out a dark brown/black, similar colour to Guinness, has a small white head. Smells of coffee and malt. Has a very strong bite on the first sip, strong malty/coffee taste, and lingers on your tongue for a while. Creamy texture mixed with a nice alcohol bite make this a good beer, I’ll definitely have it again.

On tap at The Olde Ship, Santa Ana Ca. Pours dark black with a full smooth and creamy white head. Mellow aroma of chocolate and coffee. Flavor of malts, chocolate and coffee. Very nice white lacing down the glass. Flavor is mild and watery, not as intense as its american cousin.

The original is usually the best and in this case it just might be. It never disappoints. It has all the hallmarks of a great beer: flavor, balance and drinkability. I’m not a huge fan of fuggles but it surely works in this classic. Pour me another.
