MrChopin (621), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA May 9, 2008 Pours dark red/brown with white, long-lasting head. Nose is initially more malt roast/coffee, but as beer warms, chocolate scents grow in dominance. Taste was similar, starting off with more roast bitterness, caramel and chocolate developing with warmth, and finally, an exclusively sweet chocolate dominance. I found the body lifeless, probably my least favorite aspect. Vas19 (293), Maryland, USA May 7, 2008 Pours brown-black with a small tan head. Nice aroma of chocolate malt and coffee. Flavor starts very sweet and moves to a bitter coffee finish. A bit of earthiness. Good but not exceptional. Todeon (314), Sweden May 7, 2008 Updated: Jan 15, 2009Bottle. Aroma is a bit smokey and sweet with hints of chocolat and coffee. Really nice mouthfeel with flavours of chocolate, coffee and a bit fruity finish. Great english porter! sm89walt (433), Norwich, Norfolk, England May 7, 2008 Bottle. A dark, ruby red beer with a thin light tan head. Combinations of coffee and a fruitiness together with smoked malts on the nose. The flavours develop these characteristics, a mild smokiness, dark chocolate and molasses. Quite a full and chewy palate texture. Full in body and a nice diversity. soulgrowl (52), Kitakyushu-shi, Japan May 7, 2008 Aroma: Smoky and sweet. The most interesting thing I noticed about the smell is that there is a distinctly Scotch ale side to it, with a peaty caramel odor. You can smell it most strongly right as you sip it, which adds a lot to the overall flavor.
Appearance: Looks like Newcastle’s evil twin, or maybe the bastard son of a Newcastle and a Guinness. Very dark, with brownish auburn tones, similar to Worcestershire sauce. Thin, ash-colored head reminds me of toasted marshmallows.
Flavor: Highly mocha-esque, with lots of caramel coming through. That’s not to say it’s like a Frappucino or something, because there’s nothing sugary about this beer. It’s bitter through and through, with notes of roasted nuts. It has a clean, sweet finish, and the aftertaste is all espresso, but unfortunately it doesn’t last long.
Palate: Pretty light and creamy, which is rare in a beer with this much flavor.
Overall: Very easy to drink, but I think this might come at the expense of the taste, which deserves to be a little denser and richer than it is. Overall, though, my senses were satisfied without being overwhelmed. Very nice! Svesse (2597), Hässelby, Sweden May 4, 2008 (Keg at White Horse, Parson’s Green, London, 26 April 2008) Dark brown colour, almost black, with frothy pale brown head. Roasted, malty nose with notes of chocolate. Roasted, malty taste with chocolate, coffee and a nice coffee bitterness in the finish. A classic example of the style. Slightly less complex and fruity than the cask conditioned version, but in great balance. Very nice beer. yespr (11645), Copenhagen O, Denmark May 4, 2008 50 cL can. Pours dark brown with and orange glare an a creamy and light brown/tan head. Roasted malt, light chocolate note and mild earthy note in the aroma. Amost creay mouthfeel. Flavour is roasted malt, light chocolate and a very mild smoke note. Dry roasted malt finish with a light bitterness. aubucs (15), Florida, USA May 3, 2008 Bottle, $10.99/ 6pk I believe. Beautiful dark brown color with cherry highlights. Minimal off white head that faded pretty quickly. Chocolate smell dominates, but trace of coffee in background. Great mouthfeel, very easy to drink for such a complex beer. Taste is very complex to me, hard to easily describe as a new rater. Overall it is one of the easiest to drink of the great beers. How very British.
