Big black coffee taste with some underlying fruitiness. Fairly roasty and thick. Just the right amount of bitterness and not too overroasted. Beautiful, exceptional, what Porters and Stouts should aspire to be. Thanks Clark VV bluemeow76 (693), Lewis Center, Ohio, USA

Creamy, roasty, chocolate with mild bitterness and a coffee finish. Very nice. I gave this a 4.4 when I was young and naive and will not change it now. wnp22 (682), Toronto (Roncesvalles Village), Ontario, Canada
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Dec 19, 2003 Tasted in Toronto from the LCBO. Tasted in English pint glass. Pours very well from the bottle with a consistent and well maintained creamy white head. Colour is dark, almost black, but with a slightly reddish brown hue when held to the light. Aroma is very strong - chocolate, sweetness and a hint of alcohol. Taste is very nice - strong roasted malt chocolate flavour with a slight molassis ending and a very subtle burnt bitter finish. De facto reference model of the porter style. Suttree (2751), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Mar 18, 2003 Smelled a little alcohol when I first opened it, but mostly got an aroma of rosted nuts. Almost like a chocolate milk flavor, and in texture as well. The alcohol in the nose is not at all present in the taste. Very, very rich. Dickinsonbeer (3587), Hoboken, New Jersey, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Dec 28, 2003 I can see why this is the best rated porter. More of a brown porter than a robust porter. Awesome deep brown with amber highlights, clear and a great tan head which stays for a while- lacing is also nice. Great aroma- chocolate malt dominates with some crystal malt in the background- with no hops. Flavor is smooth and clean with lots of chocolate and dark malts with little hops. FInish is still smoth with a touch of bitterness. This beer is by far the best porter I have ever had. Very well done. Nuffield (2749), Roseville, Minnesota, USA

The head was enchanting, like a thick ice cream float, and the feel in the mouth an excellent combination of richness and subtle carbonation. Long finish. The taste is the usual suspects: coffee, chocolate, roasted nuts. The aroma is a bit understated. In the end, I think I prefer Fullers 1845. //Re-rate, June 2004. My wife bought a bottle to use in making an onion gravy, since she recalled that the recipe called for some kind of alcohol (it actually called for a sweet wine!). But the gravy turned out great (with sausage and over wide noodles), and there was over half a bottle left for me to enjoy, and it was much more than I had originally remembered. beerlovinman99 (124), USA
